Yaris clutch change with MMT box

My MMT clutch seems to be slipping and I can't find a way to adjust it precisely so I want to change the clutch.

Indeed Toyota want to charge me a million quid to change the clutch, box and their stupid actuators but I jus know the clutch plate is worn so how do I do it?

I have changed clutches previously on proper cars so I doubt this is that hard but can I do it?

 

Any ideas orguides please?

Same as the clutch on a manual but you need to put it in clamp mode first, once the job is done you need to initialize the gearbox, a bad clutch actuator can cause a slipping clutch symptom

An independent will charge £5-600 to do the job

Thanks. Can it be done from inside the engine bay - in other words simply with the bonnet open and removing parts upwards?

To change a clutch ? No, it's a gearbox out job

 

If you are talking about the clutch clamp - it's electronic (see the attached pdf)

can the Clutch actuator be tested in the car?

if not there are places that offer a test and recondition, will the unit remove with the gearbox still attached to the engine in the car?

Mine is slipping but i thought rather than the clutch being on its way out the actuator may just not be fully engaging it?

Hi thanks for your reply, I had wondered if a faulty actuator would mimic a worn clutch by not fully engaging it.

I really don’t know where to take it, the dealer wants £1400 just to fit a new clutch, they said another £1000 if the actuator has a fault, that’s not viable for a 2010 car.

No mention of them carrying out this TSB either, and I wouldn’t think they were doing much work on older cars with those prices,

I need a good independent toyota specialist but there nothing I can see in scotland, I asked a few independent garages and was told it’s just a manual clutch, when i mentioned about the sequence before removal and after the new clutch is fitted they didn’t appear to know what I was on about. 

I’m  at the point id put it on a trailer and take it to anyone that is experienced to get my mum back on the road! 

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Update…

The car has been sitting as couldn’t find anywhere that appeared confident to look at it.

I took it a run today and tried the Manual side of the gearbox, going up hill i could accelerate hard no slipping, but as soon as I put it to automatic ‘E’ and accelerate  the revs immediately  increase without speed especially on hills.

What could cause this?

Weirdly it seems quite common for the car to work better in manual mode than automatic - I've seen a lot of MMT owners mentioning similar findings.

How to fix it is trickier - The only common garages that have the right procedures for checking it are Toyota dealers and they charge a fortune, and usually just fire the parts cannon at the problem instead of pinpointing the problem. There are probably Toyota specialists that can fix them but finding an actually real one is the trick.

Not that this helps much, but sometimes the problem can be fixed by recalibrating the system (Which AFAIK needs Toyota's TechStream software), otherwise it's usually the clutch or the actuator that needs replacing and then recalibrating the system.

In my personal opinion tho', if you can afford it and aren't too attached to the car, I'd either exchange it for a manual one or a newer one that has the CVT gearbox. The MMT is one of the worst gearboxes Toyota ever made, and while I'd normally avoid CVTs for their unreliability, Toyota has somehow made theirs reliable - Certainly a lot more reliable than the MMT has been!

Thanks for your reply, it’s my mums car unlikely to change it, 

desperate for a decent Toyota Specialist but can’t find any, i’d put it on a trailer and take it anywhere in the uk to somewhere that knows what they are doing, anyone one with any recommendations????

At first I was convinced the clutch actuator was the fault as the gear light came on and there was a fault code that my local garage didn’t record they just cleared it.

The light has never come back on, i will need to check if there are any fault codes again.

After speaking to a few different folk including a guy that is experienced in changing this type of clutch I was convinced it was just a worn clutch, that was until i drove it in the manual mode, it made it up the steepest hills no problem with no slippage, that’s not a worn clutch.

I don’t want to jump in and recalibrate incase i induce another fault, i’m glad i didn’t let a local garage change the clutch as they were not going to initialise anything which would have make it undrivable!

I just need someone who can diagnose the actual problem rather than just change all part as the dealer would do.

Techstream or a higher end scan tool will give you access to the gearbox ecu (TCU) and data

you could try the old turn it off and back on again, (disconnect the Battery for 15 mins)

An update to this gearbox issue, today i finally got round to trying the reset procedure, it made it better but didn’t cure it so i am now more confident it’s the clutch that’s worn rather than an accutor.

One thing i noticed was the gear changes take a lot longer, the procedure in this thread appears to  cover 5gear models, mine has 6 gears so presumably there should be a document for the 6speed giving lower speed gear changes? 

The next dilemma is a decent garage up for the job! I can’t believe there’s nowhere in Scotland!

It's just as tricky finding a specialist who actually knows how to fix an MMT down here too if that makes you feel any better!!

It's kinda weird as there seem to be loads of places that can fix german DSGs!

yes i see DSG advertising all over you would think they are more technically involved/ difficult!

The MMt don’t look hard, i just don’t have the tools or the facilities really and most of all the time at the moment, 

id disengage the gearbox let a garage fit it and then re engage and do the rest! 

But can’t  find someone that will take it on. 

it’s too good a car to scrap!

The actual mechanical side of the MMT isn't too specialized from what I understand, as it's basically a manual gearbox with some actuators. It's the re-initializing of the computer parts afterwards that they all seem to cock up.

It's one of the issues I'm anticipating with long term EV maintenance, as the stuff that goes wrong in them is more in the software, and that's all locked by the manufacturer.
