Toyota approved used car key/spare key at sale

Hi,

I'm hoping to find out if it's acceptable to receive 1 x master key in the form of a button fob and 1 x sub key when buying a main dealer 2nd hand 2014 RAV4.

When buying just over a year ago I was given a key fob with buttons to naturally lock/unlock/open boot and also given what I  was then told was a spare key.

I had the key fob master stolen from work a just over a week ago and have since established that the so called 'spare key' is a actually a sub key or valet key so won't be able to reprogramme a new master key from it.

Is it reasonable that I  should have been told? Had I have been told , I'd have insisted on a spare master key before the sale.

Any thoughts?

As far as I'm aware, the Toyota Approved Used Car scheme covers provenance checks, vehicle condition checks, a minimum 12 month warranty against manufacturing defects and roadside assistance.

Doesn't specifically cover how many keys are provided as part of the sale or the types of keys provided.

Obviously it won't cover stolen keys. Have you checked your insurance policy to see whether you are covered for theft or loss of keys?

You don't say exactly which model ... but a RAV4 of that time should have originally had 2x button fob style master keys plus the valet key - my 2013 RAV4 did.

I suspect that the dealer simply handed over the keys that they had ...

I assume that you don't have the number of the key anywhere?

If it's the 2014 in your profile there is no master and slave/sub, a new key can be programmed with ease more importantly you need the old key removed from the system what can be done with techstream - remove all keys and add them

1 Fob and 1 key is standard, unless you have keyless entry and/or Go (start button and no ignition barrel)

One thing is for sure that when you PX a car at a dealers they specifically ask does it have two keys and check on the day of the handover.  So I’d have expected to have been given two fob keys when I bought the car.

Not all Toyotas were supplied with two fobs when new - for example even today, the current Aygo comes with one fob and one key.

Thanks to all for previous replies, really appreciated.

Are you saying that a new key with button Fob(that disables the security dydtem and alliws the csr to start and, opens the doors with the remote buttons) can be created if I only have a sub-key(valet key)?

Yes luckily I do as the silver tag with key number was attached to what i though was my master spare key when in fact it was just a valet key.

Registered January 2014, 63 plate. I have a grey(no fob buttons) key.

Can a new jey fob be programmed and previous keys removed? If so, what cost is likely and who can do it?

I always record the key number in the service book in case the metal tag goes AWOL

You learn something everyday.  I have to say that I’ve never owned a car bought in the last umpteen years that did not come with two fob keys. Sounds pretty cheap to me.
