2016 Yaris hybrid audio upgrade

Hi, I'd like to add Apple Carplay and Android Auto to my car and thought about buying a new unit from Halfords, they can install as well. The fitter told me I would lose the rear camera and parts would come to £90 and fitting £55 and the unit starts from £350. I also rang Toyota as I really didn't feel 100% comfortable with what the Halfords fitter was telling me, but Toyota told me my car was too old and I was better off upgrading the car which I thought was a bit drastic

I just wondered if anyone on the forums has done similar and what did they find was the best options?

many thanks

Unfortunately your car is unable to have Apple carplay/Android auto ( was never available on 2011-2020 Yaris ) so our options are:

  • Find a local car audio specialist to fit an alternative head unit supporting AA/ACP they can advise you on what unit best suits your need just stick with a reputable brand e.g Sony, Alpine, Pioneer etc it should also be possible via an adaptor to retain your factory rear view camera
  • An additional module such as Here

Thanks for the reply. The unit I was looking at in Halfords was a Pioneer so maybe I'll go with that. The option to have it on the dash with trailing wires don't appeal to me, but thanks for the link anyway

You can get camera retention leads, they use an adapter to plumb the original camera into the headunit. It does need to have a voltage adapter, to bring the 12v as used by many aftermarket cameras down to 6v as used by Toyota.

The only tricky bit is getting a signal to the head unit so it knows the car is in reverse, as the original head unit just listens for a CANBUS signal. A good auto electrician will do it with minimal faff and time spent.

There is a third option, involving Android units that plug into the factory head unit and sits inside the dash where the satnav would go. I've got one and find it incredibly handy, but it is expensive for what it is, and I have been tempted to replace it with a proper aftermarket unit at some point.

TBH AA and AC head units start around £300, but you're looking closer to £400 + fitting kit the main reason i didn't go aftermarket was losing the hybrid screens - but i have now upgraded to the 17 on gauges with colour lcd - that displays all the information - not cheap, and it took a while to work out the programming/ mileage correction

Shop around, halfrauds are rarely the cheapest - i would look at something like an SPH-EVO62DAB
