servicing advice

I have a a auris hybrid 66 plate 45k on the clock [ 5  last sept 21]

I have a service due in the next month, the local dealer did mention relax? [ i think that is the name}

the local dealer in Norfolk-  seem to like find extra costs, when i have taken it for the service.

I am i correct -  while it has a Toyota service it continues to a toyota warranty?

where i could take it to a local independent Toyota dealer - for half the service costs. full service £170

I understand that I still need to have a Check on the hybrid side of things [ as they have a 10 year warranty?]I may on a limited budget, so the independent dealer in Norwich -  sounds appealing.

suggestions and opinions appreciated.

Any other members in the Norwich / south Norfolk area?

Hybrid health check, to keep the HV Battery warranty up to 15 years is £45. Its included as part of the Intermediate and Full services, along with visual checks etc.

You could look for a 3rd party extended warranty, but its a choice of cost vs peace of mind. Main dealer servicing is always more expensive, but there is the reassurance of knowing that the dealer (should) be fully conversant, trained and have access to genuine parts plus you get the Hybrid Health check, and an additional year's warranty. Similarly you should be assured that the dealer is doing everything per Manufacturer's recommendation and you have potential redress if they miss something, regardless of the additional warranty.

Of course, you need to balance that with the age of the car, how long you plan to keep it, mileage you cover etc.

Sorry, cannot help with local independents/specialists.

The Relax extended warranty is detailed in the following topic:

Yes you can have the car serviced elsewhere and currently pay separately for the hybrid health check which will reduce the difference in service costs to around £125, and provide a 1 year/10,000 mile hybrid Battery extended warranty.

A third party extended warranty, if you were to go down this route, will probably cost more than the £125.

Without the Relax warranty, if you have a major issue with the car for which you ask Toyota to help under goodwill, as the car will have been serviced outside the Toyota dealer network, any goodwill may be refused.

At the end of the day it is your money and your choice.

So Mon, you know a full service at Toyota is £345 and your local independent will do it for £170. Take it to a Toyota dealer and get the extra 12 month/10000 mile warranty and consider it cost you £170. Could you buy a warranty for £170 per year.? and trust the working of it? Well actually you could take another £45 (hybrid health check) off, so can you buy a warranty for £125 per year.?
of course you don’t have to have the hybrid health check, but free with a service or £45 for a year extension and that goes on annually up to 15 years.

pre limited budget, we all feeling the pinch, that is why when the wife goes shopping she will by from Aldi rather then Sainsburys (though Aldi isn’t always cheapest). Just need to be careful where savings should be made. When you come to sell the car….. what looks better, a stamp in a service book from apToyota or an independent garage. If no service book ie all done on line by Toyota then any work outside of Toyota may be difficult prospective buyer to see work done.

Tbh with Toyota service to include Battery health check and a year of warranty  there is no point looking for alternatives, unless you are doing crazy high miles and prefer to service by yourself or trusted friend mechanic and not thinking of asking Toyota for help if anything goes wrong. 👍

I have booked the car in for Monday, with SLM Attenborough Norfolk, but there website says £365 Inc petrol treatment & a disinfectant treatment for the cabin.but when I called they quoted £386. I will query that when I am there. They offered to do that price £365 with out the 2 treatments. I feel they are just pushing for more money. My next nearest dealer is the same dealership group

Also the car has 47k on the clock @ 5 years 5 months old, but the dealer says it needs a 60k service and new spark plugs.Surely if it needs plugs at 60K they should be changed nearer 60 k miles ( approx next service) Now the car is out of Warrenty, I was going only for the Relax extended warranty.

Any advice?

Is the car a 2016 on a 66 plate or a 2017 on a 66 plate?

Think the front of your service book gives some i formation regarding what items are done/due which includes spark plugs. As far as I'm aware, they're due at 6 years/60,000, whichever occurs first.

As regards which service is due, how many services has the car had? Was it bought new or used? If used, is there a long gap between two of the services when it might have been on sale as a used car?

Register date 1/9/2016

Warranty book just says 60k for spark plugs

I bought the car s/hand from a family member, who bought this new.

Service April 17 9600m

Dec 17  15158 miles

July 19 25270 miles

Jan 20 35156 miles

Feb 21 40600 miles the mileage is now 47000 miles

I see you missed a service on Dec 18 as it is supposed to be 10,000/12 months which ever is earliest.

Services are due at 12 month or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

There is something odd about the service history.

The April 2017 service was done on the mileage basis (10K)

For some reason the Dec 17 service was done early at around 8 months/5,558 miles - neither on the time or mileage basis.

The next service should have been done at 12 months (Dec 2018), but instead was done late in Jul 2019.

The Jan 20 service was done on the mileage basis (10K).

The Feb 21 service on the time basis.

So the 6th service (6 years) is due this month based on the time basis (12 months since the Feb 21 service).

I am not sure how such a vehicle that has missed a schedule service, therefore nullifying the original 5 year warranty can pick up on the Relax warranty. Anyone any thoughts or even facts.

A late service doesn't necessarily nullify the new car warranty in its entirety. If a warranty claim is made which is dependent on the correct servicing having been done, that claim is affected by the service history.

At the end of the day it will be down to Toyota and the dealer.

Hi , £365-£386 seems to me very expensive given it’s at most 3 filters at roughly £10 each (oil air cabin) a gallon of oil £45 and 4 plugs £5 each , fuel treatments are £5-6 . Just my opinion but a trusted local garage to you would do it for fare less , or ask on Facebook for local recommendations for driveway mechanics or trusted garages

Oh you're not wrong, it is extremely expensive - You're paying for the very high per-hour rate of dealer mechanics mostly. The materials cost is a tiny fraction of the cost.

This is also why anyone that tells you electric cars are cheaper to service is lying to you - Sure they don't need spark plugs and oil, but servicing is 90% inspecting the car for problems (Supposedly... I'm quite suspicious a lot of the checks aren't really done) so you're basically paying for mechanic time which will be similar either way.

Having a full Toyota service history is not listed as a requirement for the Relax warranty. If it were then it would likely mean many, possibly most cars wouldn't benefit because a lot of cars out of the original warranty and on their second or third owner won't have FSH.

Plus the list of exclusions on the Relax warranty is so long that if service history was a concern then it's already covered by the exclusions and Relax wouldn't cover it.

Bear in mind that as the Dealer will be doing the service, they will notice anything that may be an issue to the warranty and will more than likely ask you to pay to have anything fixed before they issue the Relax warranty. I'm sure that if it was noted at the service and you declined to have it repaired, it probably wouldn't be covered under the warranty anyway (possibly one of the exclusions). Therefore, there should be no reason for a car to have a Full service history. We're paying for preventative maintenance before we get the Relax warranty.

The short answer is that I tend to agree with AJones above.

I am not sure ,the car came from a relative, in Norfolk, the 4/2017 was in Derbyshire. 12/2017 was in Norfolk

I have got the car July 2017 so have paid for the last 3

I guess my relative must have bought the car with 9600 miles not new?

Depends what you're comparing the Relax warranty with.

As an extended warranty it should be compared to third party extended warranties - eg Warranty Direct - rather than Toyota's previous new car warranty (5 years/100,000 miles). Both types of extended warranty cover mainly mechanical components, and, being extended warranties, are not covered by Block Exemption regulations, so the warranty provider can, if they choose, stipulate where servicing is done (eg Toyota dealer, etc).

Having said that, can we return to the topic subject - servicing advice - rather than discuss the merits of the Relax warranty.

Although I’m not in your area, I had my 2016 Auris Excel hybrid hatchback serviced and MOT’d at Inchcape Nottingham Toyota under the Toyota Relax scheme in December. They extended my original Toyota 5 year warranty for another year, they did the hybrid health check which guarantees the hybrid system and the hybrid Battery for another year, and they also security marked the catalytic converter for free as an anti thef deterrent. I’ve been happy to pay main dealer prices for the peace of mind that a full car Toyota warranty offers. Inchcape Nottingham Toyota have really good attentive customer service staff.  I have been very happy. 👍🏻

Toyotas online booking system offer the service for the correct price of £340 ( using a 2016 Auris 1.8 booking @ SLM Attleborough ) this is the correct Fixed price as set out by Toyota
