Repair costs for rear brake pipes?

Car MOT failed on rear brake pipes corroded. Dangerous failure. I was aware they were a bit corroded and due to be replaced sometime so I would not have been surprised at an advisory. I was a bit shocked at the garage quote to replace these, £300 the pair plus £36 to replace both front wipers. I normally do my own repairs and would expect to do that in about 4 hours at a total cost of about £60 brake fluid, pipes and wipers. However just having moved to a house with a dangerously steep drive so not a place to be jacking cars up this will need to be a garage job. Am I completely out of touch with costs or have i Just been over the barrel.

Prices don’t seem to be very expensive. Wipers you can replace yourself

I agree with you, you are out of touch with pricing. A Toyota main dealer could £80+ ph, independent £60+ ph, back street garage £20 ph + 2 books of green shield stamps. 😄

If I was doing it myself I would do as you have and cut out the corroded bit rather than the whole length of pipe however \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\I do not know exact5ly what section is being replaced. Garages (mostly) are not interested in saving you money by doing an economic repair.

I don’t see the point in replacing the whole pipe front to rear when only 100mm is corroded.

You are allowed one union in each pipe to allow for this very scenario and, if you look under your bonnet you’ll see that the front left brake pipe has a union in it from new so they can’t say it is not a proper repair.

I think £300 to repair two pipes is OTT.

I haven't seen the rear pipes on my Avensis yet, but, what I can say is my wife's Mini needed a rear brake pipe changed recently. It was a really awkward long one which comes around/under the fuel tank. Lots of things I do myself, but this sort of thing is best left to an expert. I was charged £80 all in with a fluid change thrown in.

That's a could be a good price for this job as it is a ballache and will take quite a bit of time to do. Mine are corroded (MOT did not check it)

Toyota did alert me to this when they serviced and they recommended it is done but it was going to be around 500-600. I asked my local guy to take a look as he was doing some other jobs for me and he said it should get done and took photos of it. He said he could do it but recommended he would not be much cheaper than Toyota with the time taken and is a specialist job. I am getting a proper quote now.,. as want to get it done as plan on keeping this workhorse.

Wipers are easy, if I could find the right ones I need to replace mine as they have perished after that storm...
