Better to keep it simple with modifications.  Maybe a smart set of alloys, wind deflectors, rear tints, etc.  One of my favourite interior modifications is to add a nice touchscreen system.  If you go down the route of noisy exhausts, lowering, etc. you will just draw police attention and cause annoyance.

That is so true ! Not that I wish it on anybody, but I've learnt a lot from accidents that were my fault, and quite a bit from some that weren't !

Hi,

you can look on eBay Toyota official store does some nice original wheels, keep it standard size but it will look modern and(different) yours 👌, you can also look for info screen, there are some good names 7-9” infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and android auto that fit into single or double din audios, service, clean it and keep it in top condition is what can make it to stand out of the crowd and be your joy and pride 👍

There are plenty of things you can do it depends on your skill level tbh, folding mirrors, illuminated mirror switch, illuminate switches, Ambient lighting, stereo (inc speakers) sound deadening, colour code the interior trim

wheels, exhaust, body mods, lowering, and anything engine related will bump up your insurance, even more so if you on your own insurance for the first time (0 NCB)

LED bulb swaps for your internals, side lights and repeaters cost under £10.

Remove ‘u-bend’ plastic hose on intake side of air filter housing for more flow and throatier sound £Free or like I did source a small piece of aluminium pipe with a 30° bend for a more finished look £7. Sports air filters are snake oil on these cars so decent paper filters are just fine.

Sort out the wobbly ride with a set of sports springs £150-200 plus fitting.

Make sure you have decent tyres, and keep them inflated properly.

Keep on top of servicing. Always using quality filters/ oil (learn to do yourself if possible and save loads/ know what’s going in).

And treat it to premium fuel fairly regularly.

Decent first car, enjoy!

It does make me laugh how young drivers want to mod cars and ultimately turn a reasonably nice car into a noisy eyesore that they will struggle to resell, if they don’t crash it 😆

as some have said just go for comfort upgrades like some sensible window tinting, infotainment system which you can get from aliExpress.

If it’s an older car look to doing some refurbs like replacing seat covers, warn gear knobs and so on.

also don’t skimp on the tyres, especially if you are going to drive like a teenager 🙄

And the end raises a question.  Would you really want to spend much money on an eleven year old car?

My suggestion is clean it, really clean it.  Not just the outside but boot, bonnet, underneath, inside clean the seats, carpet etc.  A bit of polish and TLC will make it stand out from other 11 year old ones.

Are the headlight lenses crystal clear; you can get them polished.  It the engine and engine compartment sparkling?  This has several benefits.  One is bragging rights.  Another is you may see pipes that might need changing, Battery tray corrosion, oil and hydraulic leaks.  Of which you might look at all the fluids, coolant, hydraulics etc.

My brother in law had a hot rod Escort. Fitted a small steering wheel etc. When we looked under the bonnet it looked like a coal hole. On my advice he cleaned it up, became an aircraft mechanic, an engine specialist, turbine engineer, North Sea engineer, and is now a senior health and safety manager all stemming from attention to detail.

Enjoy it.
