19” wheels a pain to clean

I find The 19” wheels on the PHEV Dynamic and HEV Excel a pain to clean. Too many spokes, nooks and crannies. Anyone think similar or swapped theirs?

The do look good though?  So I just use a thick microfibre cloth / shampoo etc. and go around each section takes few minutes a wheel but worth it in my opinion.

I'll ask the man down the car wash next time I go.

Ask your man if what they spray on to clean the wheels is not going to cause longer term problems to the wheel.

Non acidic TFR mixed with water, I use that then jet wash and then at the end of the shampooing of the whole car I go for the wheels with the mitt too and rinse off with the jet wash. All clean and healthy. Hybrids wheels never get too much of a brake dust or cooked dirt as they are always cold, except winter salt that becomes sticky like a black glue 😉👌

But, Tony, what does the man at the car wash use, that’s what I was addressing to Roger. I saw one time someone blaming a car wash that he regularly used blaming a car wash for early deterioration of his wheels.

I’ve seen so many car wash people using high pressure jet washes close up and personal not only on the car body but the wheels/tyres, never a good thing in my book. I always do my own cars I know what’s going on and what I’m using on the car.

The last few cars I've had have been ones with very multi spoke wheels and a pain in the ubik to wash.

The ones on my Rav design are fantastic, so easy to keep clean.

A couple of cars ago I had a Jaguar F type with these wheels.  Never again would I have a car with a wheel like that.f-type_c2p18511_1_1.thumb.jpg.809f34b6fcbca4c56d34830178cd1dfd.jpg

The Avensis I have now has these wheels, what a difference when it comes to cleaning them.

They are similar to the wheels on my previous Volvo. Very easy to clean and get to the back or inside of the wheel too. And to be honest I am not over fond of the look of the wheels on my RAV. A bit too bling for me, Much prefer simple design/styling

The Rav wheels.  So easy to clean, smooth ride and although i am a careful driver, they protect against kerbing unlike the trendy 21 inch spinnaz with rubber band tyres.

My problem is I can't buy a spacesaver due to the fact they are 19" 😟

Good job done 👌

These does not look that bad to clean to me, Corolla and some Mercedes Evs and other electric cars has seriously crazy designs that makes cleaning a nightmare, except if is done contact less or with valet brush. Here a Hyundai alloys, the only good bit is that they cover the discs nicely so less rust and the size is superb for comfort, efficiency and against kerbs 😉👌 And here the easiest wheels that I ever cleaned, Auris hybrid 2010.

The Rav4 Excel 2022MY has a space saver (same wheel style) fitted as standard although the wheels are 235/55r19 I would imagine this should be OK

Buy a 18” spec saver, perfectly OK.

Hi

as said before I find the 19 inch wheels very easy to clean though I use 2 different size wheel brushes.

You will find that an 18 inch wheel will work as a spare as said here before

Whether you have 17”, 18” or 19 “ wheels the circumference of the tyre is the same. With a bigger wheel the height ( side wall ) of the tyre is reduced to compensate. So you could use a space saver from a 18” or 17” wheeled RAV on a 19” wheeled one. I’ve got a 18” full sized spare ( from a previous RAV)

The 19” wheels on the PHEV are much more more convoluted in their design. Those are fine and would happily have them.

Still waiting for mine to be delivered, it could be in the next couple of weeks so at present I don't know but most of them are smaller than the full size wheel, I will let you know when I can check it.

You can download the owners manual and take a look ...

Toyota offer two types of compact spare - T165/80D17 104M and T165/90D18 107M. The later would be a better match for a 235/55R19 101V. Information taken from the latest manual (so for a car built in Feb 2022).

Edit: the above taken from the HEV manual. The PHEV manual specifies only one compact spare - the T165/90D18 107M

I did ask the dealer and he said that Toyota do not supply a spacesaver for my vehicle, and I would need to purchase a full size 19" wheel, at over £800 😮

I also read somewhere that a spacesaver needs to be no more than 10% smaller than the other wheels rolling radius ?

Thanks for the info Keith, just need to get my head round this 😃

I would have thought the dealer should have been more helpful then,  as he told me that Toyota didn't do a spacesaver for my vehicle and I would have to buy a full size 19" spare at over £800. He said that he had already supplied a few to other customers.

The T165/90D18 107M is 1.7% larger than the 235/55R19 101V - so it's a pretty good match and perfectly fine as a get-you-home spare
