Auris hybrid air con fan noise

Hi, when my ac is on I get quite a loud buzzing noise from the fan near the radiator on the front of the car, if I turn the ac off but leave th blower on the fan stops spinning and the buzzing noise goes away. As the buzzing is quite loud and fairly recent I don’t know if it’s covered by the relax warranty, my car is the 2014 model.

Just as a note, the air on is still cold and when I said I turn the air con off the fan stops spinning I mean the one under the bonnet my blower continues to work fine just no aircon.

Buzzing sound when AC is on in Toyota hybrids usually comes from the AC compressor, the hotter the weather is the louder the buzzing sound is. There is also one more possibility why buzzing sound is so prominent, when your ac system is running low on gas. Best to record this sound on a video and share with us to determine if we are talking about same thing or it’s a sound that comes from the cooling fans. Cooling fans if bearings are worn out may sound a bit dodgy with vibrations as well.

I hope these short videos help I didn’t make them longer as I don’t know the file size limit

Confirmed, it is the air conditioner compressor. You can hear it also how it’s changing rpm and noise as well., while the fan is almost completely silent. Give a good look around the radiators (condenser) and if all dry and looking good book an appointment for ac check and regas. Once you do it the AC compressor will be quieter and you will have ice cold air con. Change your cabin filter too, located behind the glove box, and keep replacing it every 10k miles or 12 months.
Good one here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173521013506?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=CfWbZDI9QQ6&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=p34UK1z2T4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Air con regas if you leave anywhere close to any of these garages https://www.protyre.co.uk

not every garage can do hybrids ac as those need specialist oil. You can do Toyota dealers too but it’s more expensive, AC regas every 3-5 years, I do mine 3-4 years. 👍

Thanks for the reply, it’s booked in Friday for an air con service so hopefully it will sort things out. I’m hoping there is no damage, out of interest which way is the airflow for the cabin filter in layman’s terms does it flow up to down or down to up.

That’s actually the normal sound of your ac compressor, nothing to worry about it. Also if the system is low on gas it will become noisier a bit but it will not cause any damage., if it’s too low it will stop function to prevent any possible damage. You can hear the compressor is louder when the cabin temperature is high and the ac need to work harder to cool off the interior. Re gas and filter is as per maintenance procedures. Air flow you can select from dashboard buttons, when using AC select air flow towards feet and middle of the dash, not towards windscreen., air stream to come from inside or outside and this is automatic, the car itself make the selection. 👍

I’m sorry I didn’t make myself clear, when changing the cabin filter my new one indicates which way it should go referencing airflow with an arrow pointing the direction of the airflow but my old one has no indication so I’m not sure of which way round to put it in.

thanks for your replies.

Sorry, it might be me I didn’t get it first time. Air flow is from top towards bottom, you have to take that into account. The filter I have recommended goes with arrow pointing down to match the car air flow direction. Toyota oem filters shows arrow up and this is to point filter position when replacing. Usually letter markings should read correctly.

Thanks for all your help hopefully the air on service sorts all my problems out. The reason I asked about airflow is since I put my new cabin filter in I get lots of white bits floating out of the vents so I most probably put it in the wrong way around.

You can double check it, and here there is another post about white bits.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had an air con service and on the test no leaks were found so that is all ok but I still have a loud buzzing which I need to get investigated, now is this just me or is that buzzing normal. I have owned the car for 6 years now and can’t say I’ve noticed this before so obviously I don’t want to be wasting anyones time. As a footnote the white powder has now stopped totally so that is all good.

Noise it’s normal, at least that on the video you had shared earlier. The ac service as periodic and preventative maintenance every 2-4 years. Pollen filter every year or 10k miles. Don’t worry about the ac, it’s electric and it’s running on the hybrid Battery power, if anything goes wrong you will have a fault code and no AC at all. The buzzing sound is more prominent at first when the car is hot and the ac is working harder to cool it off., then it’s quiet. 👍 Good for the white powder that has gone, because this is a real trouble to fix.
