How to fix DRL on 3gen restyle

Hi,

on various italian forums I read that the DRL of the 3gen restyle Yaris (2017-2019) are burned out (like in photo), and Toyota doesn't want to apply warranty, and a whole headlight costs between 400 and 600€. An user has disassembled the headlight and ''there are no short circuits, the problem is that the led is not soldered and the contact sparks and burns the plastic of the light duct'' [cit.] (see photo).

Is there a solution to avoid the DRL burned or to fix the led?

Don't recall this being a common topic subject for UK cars.

Warranty issues would be down to the respective importer - in this case Toyota Italy.

That's ok, but is there a DIY solution? Or tuned headlight

I have found a tuner that mod the headlights, fixing the led strip and adding a dynamic directional lights 😄

I am having the same problem in one of the DRL LED strips of my Toyota Yaris fuel 2018. Always the one on the upper half. It has lasted 4 and a half years and indeed the cost of changing the whole headlight is super expensive (500€, Madrid Spain, official Toyota house). I have found this to be a common problem for many Yaris users both in Europe and other Toyota international forums. It is quite disappointing, If I could happily pay 500€ per headlight every 4 years I wouldn't have a Yaris....

It is difficult to repair, but is really a dumb problem: it is the solder between the chip and the base that obscures (due to the flickering of the solder) the light tube...the difficult part is to open the headlight

Have same problem with 2018 Yaris, dealer quoted 700 and Toyota Relax warranty does not cover lights

annoying...hope that big T will release a fix for this...when my right led will be KO, I think I'll fix it with a new strip led (250€ for both)

That is not good, push Toyota for a goodwill gesture. 

Had a 2016 with normal bulbs, thankfully only cost upto £2 for these small bulbs, replaced a few DLR, indicator and brake bulbs in 5 years. Got a new yaris with all led now, probably end up selling at 3 year old and upgrade to the cross 130hp.

The cross has the same engine and gearbox as the yaris, its only the Lexus that is 130bhp - different engine and gearbox

 

Back on topic - LED lights are non-user serviceable like most electronics in the last 15 years - there are plenty of yaris being broken for spares if you're on a budget or just don't want to pony up the dough for OEM

it's a project problem, the LED works perfectly but the LED plate melts the silicone tube, it turns black/brown and you will see the strip turned off or yellow/brown

 

 

if you open the headlight, you can replace the strip (or cut the burned piece) and clean the LED base

 

as you can see there is one of four that has a 'burned' LED, colored by the burnt silicone tube and a little hard to clean perfectly

if you open the headlight, you can replace the strip (or cut the burned piece) and clean the LED base

you can't replace the OEM strip...there are 2 options:
1. cut and clean the OEM led and strip with a lower light
2. install new strip with new led and join with the OEM cables (you will loose the high/low intensity, only high)

I took them out, how did you clean them out? There not looking great so I'm scratching my head a bit.

have you tried with isopropyl alcohol?

how did you took them out?

The head light cover with a heat gun on the edge, slowly went round it and good couple of hours, nothing got burnt or melted, wirebrush?

can you see the strip? they will be obviously brown, you have to cut with a LOT of patience that brown face

what seal will you apply after the job?

Which part, I've attached the pic and highlighted them, I've cleaned it lightly with a cotton buds but will get the liquid tommorow, the hard bit is what needs cutting or stripping back and what tool?

I have never seen that level of burn...you can clean the led and weld the plate with the pins...but you have to clean very well the silicone tube, and they are damaged a lot

or you can think about removing the silicone tubes and install new strip led, but you have to join the +/- with the OEM wiring
