Any advice please

I’ve just bought a Toyota previa 2L diesel 2006

it has white smoke when starting but clears

black smoke when working hard

uses lots of oil but doesn’t go into the water and doesn’t overheat

struggles for power, when starting it has no power but especially at 3000 revs

runs better when the oil is topped up but it goes down quickly and can’t see where it is going. It doesn’t leak out

any ideas?

Have you scanned it for codes, have you taken the intake pipe work off the turbo and checked it for end play, are the intake pipes oiled, did you buy it with these known issues ? Private, dealer or trade sale? Don't tell me Facebook marketplace ? What's the mileage ?

It’s been very rarely used for the last four years by the way. Spent a lot of time standing

I bought it as a risk hoping it can be fixed. I could see it wasn’t overheating and thought it could be a cost effective fix. It was 2006 and £2000 thought it was worth a punt.

I will look at the pipe work as you suggest

As that is the case do a fuel filter change and drain the tank add fresh with some diesel cleaner let it run for an hour or so occasionally giving it some rpm, is the oil clean ? an oil and filter wouldn't be a bad idea either

oil goes 1 of 3 ways drops it, burns it or dumps it in the water, any blow by if you open the oil cap ?
