Buying Advice Request 2018 Toyota Yaris Design 1.5 CVT non Hybrid.

Hello Fellows,

I am currently looking to buy a 2018 Toyota Yaris Design 1.5 CVT non Hybrid.  I like the little design touches, 16 inch wheels, disc brakes all round & the tailgate spoiler.  I have two questions that I would appreciate some advice from fellow members on the forum.

1. Is there a preference for the non Hybrid 1.33 CVT version or the non Hybrid 1.5 CVT? This is in relation to fuel economy, general driving and occasional long trips on the motorway.

2. The model I am looking at does not have Satellite Navigation fitted, however, it has Touch 2 touchscreen Radio.  I am inquiring if Sat-Nav can be retro-fitted?  If so, does anyone know the approximate cost to have this done by a specialists on the forum as the dealer has quoted £600.  I am based in Fife, Scotland.

I have included a photo of the Touch 2 Touchscreen Radio that may help.

If this is a no go then I will search for another.

Thank you,

Joe Barzini.

Hi and welcome,

the bigger engine will suit the automatic transmission better and most likely be more efficient especially on the long runs. , can also be quieter too. Ref sat nav , imo it’s not worth it paying extra for build in sat nav because they are simply not as good as can be a smartphone with Google maps., nothing can beat that even Tesla. If you lorry about network signal or internet connection Google maps allows to download off line maps and can help you navigate through unknown regions. £600 if it’s me I will buy some good all season tyres for £300 and the rest for service if hasn’t been done to make sure the car is in tip top condition.
Good luck 👍

Hello Tony,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.  As to the engine size, is the 1.5 a good all rounder as it will be used mainly on local journeys and occasionally on trips up the highlands, the lake district and further South or would the 1.3 be better?  I also appreciate your thoughts on the sat-nav.  Again,Tony many thanks.

TBH there isn't much in it - Performance-wise they're very similar.

The 1.33 has the advantage of being an older design so most of the bugs should have been worked out of it by 2018 (My 2009 Mk2 Yaris had the first one when it was new and it was quite bad - Had very high oil consumption problems), while the 1.5 is newer and should have some technological improvements, mainly for emissions. Also it can run in atkinson/miller-cycle mode like the hybrid engines so could potentially be more efficient than the 1.33 when under light load.

The 1.5 non-hybrid engine is a development of the 1.33 (both versions of the NR series) and produces approx 10% more power than the 1.33. Performance-wise they're similar.

The sat nav is a separate module that can be added to the Touch 2 - however updates are expensive.

Probably be better and more cost effective to go with a good quality standalone sat nav from a decent manufacturer such as Garmin or TomTom, which has lifetime updates.

Note that 'lifetime' is as determined by the manufacturer and represents what they see as the design life of the unit.

The sat nav upgrade is simple its a few screws and clips un plug and plug in a few cables, the nav module used is £150-250, sometimes you get lucky as the sellers don't know what they have make sure it has the cable with it otherwise its £60 from the dealer

complete touch 2 and go (you will get £70-80 back for the touch 2)

Wasn't aware that the 1.5 could run on either Atkinson/ miller cycle ,having just brought one where can you find out the technical spec? Cheers in advance

I have owned a 1.33 Yaris C.V.T for five years and now have a 1.5 C.V.T. The bigger engine is far more suited to motorways etc and around town because it pulls far better at low revs. You find with the 1.3 you have to rev it more to keep up with other traffic. That said, it is a great engine.

As regards economy I am getting about 5 to 10mpg better fuel consumption. I know fuel consumption varies between drivers but I do not drive slowly and average between 40 and 53 mpg town driving and A roads.

Hello Martin,

Thank you for your insight.  How many shifts does the 2017-18 non hybrid 1.5 have is it four, five or six?

 Thanks, Joe

Cvt transmission hasn’t got gears (shifts), that’s why they are called cvt ( continuously variable transmission). Some cvt’s has pre set ratios that are available via paddle shifters mounted on steering wheel or with manual control of the gear selector +/- . The number is reality doesn’t matter as these are only to simulate gear change, but in that type of transmission they are not necessary as all can be controlled via the accelerator and all these gears are pointless therefore the numbers 4,5 or 6 does not define anything.

Hello Tony,

Thanks for your reply.  I know that a CVT does not have gears in the same meaning as a manual as such, but I was wondering why then do they have a paddle shift with + & -?

Regards, Joe
