Warning on dash...........

Twice now (last time on Friday - previously some months ago) I have had three warning beeps accompanied with a red rectangle showing on the dash. It happened so fast there was insufficient time to read the message in the red box.

Could these events be stored somewhere? Feebly, I checked messages to no avail.

Anyone else experienced this?

It might be stored in the car ecu and you will need to run a diagnostic. You can do that at the dealer not sure how much will charge or it will be free or buy yourself a scan tool, something that can connect your phone to the car can do the job too. Carista, or obd link-lx available on Amazon. 👍 If you don’t drive regularly over 20 min each time you may have low voltage in the small 12v Battery and this might be the culprit for the errors.

When you say you checked messages, was this on the car display, or in the MyT app? I had a couple of warnings in the notification area of the MyT app that occurred during the PDI but had cleared in the car. They appear to stay in the app until read and deleted so, if you haven't already, might be worth checking there?

Not had any similar warnings so don't know if this will be the case or not.

I'll ask the dealer when it's in for the charging flap repair.

Seems odd that a red warning should flash and the user can't get a handle on it - not a great piece of software.

(It is driven regularly - over 12,000 miles now in less than 9 months)

Checked in the car - nothing.

Also just checked the app. - nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It all sounds so strange, one of those things that hangs in the mind and the brain works overtime on. Hope you manage to get a determination when you get to the dealer.

Could it be the "OMG YOU'RE GOING TO CRASH BRAKE NOW! oh nevermind" message that I see at least once every day while driving to and from my work area?

The only reason I know what that message is is because of the HUD; I can imagine if I didn't have the HUD I'd still have no idea what it was because, as you say, it flashes up on the main dash for not even a second and doesn't leave any messages (Even tho' in some situations it's flashed up a message saying something like Message Displayed on Driver Display but when I look down I just see it disappearing off the MID  )

There's even a message store in the bottom of the MID menus but there's never any stored messages in it!

I sometimes wish I had a small GoPro or something I could rig up to try and record the message but I bet it's something totally asinine like Potential Collision With Object Detected Keep Eyes On Road And Take Action To Avoid.

(Honestly, it's like the people that design these systems don't drive cars in the real world...)

Think I agree with Cyker. Although not happened to the RAV4, it used to happen quite a lot with my previous Volvo XC60.

Several beeps and a fleeting flash of a red warning light on the dash. It was the anti collision system warning. Used to happen a lot if I had to weave between parked cars on either side of the road, maybe a bit too quick for the Volvo system's liking. 😁

Yeah that's the main cause of it with my Yaris - Sadly nothing I can do about it as these are narrow London roads full of parked cars!

I'm just worried it's desensitizing me to the warnings because I get them so frequently...

●The PCS warning light will turn on and “VSC Turned OFF Pre-Collision Brake System Unavailable” will be displayed on the multi-information display.

Yes, another vote for this.

Relatively common occurrence when driving on roads with no offstreet parking, as the car thinks you're planning on rear-ending everything in sight, although in reality you're just pulling in to allow an oncoming vehicle to pass.

I've had the regular warning when it thinks you are getting too close to something. But all clear this time.

TBH that sounds more like a British thing......... Look out you're gonna....ahh, never mind.

I did notice a few weeks ago the dash came up with PCS is now available, this was after driving for 10  minutes or so, the weather was good and on obstruction to the radar detector.

Hi

slightly off the subject but does the Rav 4 actually brake in an emergency or have I miss understood what I thought that I read somewhere.

According to the manual, if the RAV systems estimates a potential collision, and the driver takes no action, the car will apply automatic braking in order to avoid, or reduce the impact of, a collision.

Yes its a collision warning which gets triggered by such things as cars in adjacent lanes or half way through a turn off  etc. It would be much better if there was a secondary green message saying that the alert was triggered but then cancelled, this could persist on the screen long enough to be read without causing another risk due to the driver being distracted! My understanding of the collision avoidance is that the first phase is increased sensitivity on the brake pedal to give a stronger than usual initial bite which presumably means bypassing the normal energy recovery electronic retardation and going straight to friction braking; but its all guesswork. Automatic braking is the car's last resort and thankfully not one that I ever experienced.

Thanks for that. Interesting but I will try not to put it to the test!😀

I’ve had a situation when the car thought that a road sign across a path on a bend in the road was considered a crash hazard and the alarm went and the car braked. It was a pretty solid reaction.

I've had that. If you have the HUD it shows up there too. May be talking about something different of course.

In my case it says 'BRAKE' and I think there was a red triangle with it. Part of the emergency braking system.

Long shot but only thing I can think of.

When I collected the car (MK4) and did first drive home, all system were set on, PCS, Road signs assistance, even lane departure (nice handover from Toyota Marshall Horsham - here is your keys! Bye.).

I was warned with beep sounds and dash warnings every minute until I got home and read the manual.

My 'handover' was similar - I was hoping for a bit more of an event

My experience is that car dealers "handover briefing" is usually 50% wrong - they do not know the products they sell to any great depth, and are given to guesswork when asked questions.

I agree with that in general. With my previous Volvo, the dealership had a technical specialist who spent time with me as part of the handover, and he could answer any questions I had. It's a good strategy.

Yeah I must admit it's really surprising how little detail a lot of the salesmen of the dealers near me know about their own cars...
