gearbox sensor issue odometer?

Hi everyone, my dad's Avensis D4D 2001 wagon 2.0 has a problem on the odometer , up to 60 km/h would register speed  (not totally perfect ,but would do it) and from 60km/h further up to 100-110km/h the odometer would go down to zero ,and from 110 further would go up again. I had a friend connecting it to a scanner showing speed sensor issue, and my friend saying it might be the gearbox sensor failing . Everything else seems to work properly and no other lights are on the dashboard. I went to Toyota and they gave me the code 831813203 sensor spoedometer and price about 328€ . So, in case anybody had this issue before , i would appreciate any help where to look forward , as I'm still not totally sure that sensor might be the problem .thanks
