What are these rubber tabs for on my parcel shelf?

I have never bothered to find out but I could be missing out on some interesting feature. Or have I just got too much time on my hands.

Don't they cushion the shelf against the tailgate to help prevent rattling.

Probably, yes. Mine has one only, in the centre (2014 Yaris). Very hard "rubber/plastic" though. Which could potentially rattle more than the actual cloth covered shelf?!

On unknown features, after more than 2 years with my Corolla, I discovered that the boot side pocket liners are removable and can be mounted in  higher position thus stopping stuff rolling off the boot floor.

Just anti rattle rubber. Mine is still rather soft and rubbery.

Hi. These are anti-rattle rubbers. Mine are soft and flexible. They haven’t age hardened as some rubbers can/do. 
(2016 Auris Excel Hybrid hatchback).
