Problems with MMT gearbox

My wife drives a Yaris from 2010 with a MMT-gearbox.

Last week, on a vacation far from home, the gearbox suddenly went into neutral while driving.

I tried to get it into “Drive” or “Reverse” but no luck.

After a while I tried again and thankfully it worked again and we could make our way back to our hotel.

The day after, we drove home, 320 kilometer without any malfunctions or incidents.

This Monday it happened again, two times within just 15 minutes or so.

Therefore we took it to our local Toyota workshop but they were unable to find anything wrong with the gearbox.

The action they took was to give the cars gearbox a new software and thought that could help with the issue.

Any thoughts about what it could be?

Read about issues with the clutch actuator but isn’t that something an authorized Toyota workshop could discover?

Any thoughts and ideas would be helpful❤️

It's likely it needs a clutch if it has never been done if the clutch overheats it puts the gearbox neutral

If the car needed a new clutch, the garage would have seen that.

Must be something else?

You would think so, but main dealers are next to useless with older cars

if it's an overheating clutch, it will be more noticeable around town (lots of slow moving traffic) and will not store a code

Clutch actuators are common fault and will cause clutch failure, but you will get a fault code
