turbo shutting off on diesel rav4

Hello I've been having an ongoing problem with the turbo cutting out on my 05 Rav. I am in Canada, and so no mechanics have experience with this model, which was never on the market here. So far, new throttle body, and new suction control valves. Problem persists. It happens when I back off accelerator and revs drop, for example after shifting from 3rd to 4th, or 4th to 5th. There was no error code showing until the suction valves were changed out, now it is giving an error code 1229, fuel pressure issue. This seems to be a not unknown problem, but I am struggling with what to try next.

Regards, jack Mallon

an upate (should anyone be checking this thread), fuel pressure in rail at idle is supposed to be 37-43 mpa, when it is actually 137 mpa. Big difference. Tech went through a number of scans, all indicating working suction control valves etc, and recommends changing the rail. A new rail has been ordered.

Hi I have been advised to mention that this is a European 05, D4D 2.0l car. Had fuel rail changed and also one injector. Problem persists. Limp mode when shifting up 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th. No faults showing up now, which was the case in the beginning. Been looking at other threads on this site and besides cleaning out egr valve, and maybe also the turbo, the turbo boost switch seems to be a possibility. I do use good fuel but have only recently put in fuel additive. I will start to do that regularly, if I ever sort out the turbo issue.

Throttle body replaced with new unit. One new injector, new common rail, new scvs

nothing has made a difference.

Hi, I had a couple of these. One in particular an 04 diesel was a total pain in the backside with this problem. I Never cured it, and if I were u I wouldn't spend any more money or effort trying to fix it. The turbo boost valve- I think u are talking about changing,  replacing it will not fix the problem either. Well it didn't for me. Don't spend any more on it.

Sound advice. I gave up on my 04 d4d when that started playing up as so many people had the same issues and there didn’t seem to be a definitive answer. I got rid and bought a petrol 4.3

Thanks to you both. I have been talking to the local tech today and asked him to take it for another spin. It seems the fuel rail is really over pressurized. 20k psi at idle and 15k when it warms up. This seems to be about 4 times the spec pressure. I was corresponding with an online mechanic (justanswer) who spent some time on it and then gave up end of day. I'd have thought over pressure would be straightforward, a faulty fuel pump or switch, or pressure relief switch, whatever. Not a mechanic, obviously.

Not sure which engine that one has, but IIRC for Common Rail diesels it's normal for the high pressure fuel rail to be around 15-30k PSI depending on the engine.

My little old Yaris 1.4 D4D's rail was something like 20-25k psi!

Out of curiosity, has the diesel fuel filter in the engine bay been changed?
