realistic ability for 202 mile round trip, advice please!

Hi All,

I currently have a hybrid and my wife drives a diesel, but we're both going to be changing to working from home permanently in the near future and I'd really like to go down to one car to reduce costs. We've test driven a BZ and it would work great for us, BUT I've got a couple of questions to put to experienced owners please.

We don't do many long trips, however our daughter has just had a baby and of course we're visiting a lot more to help out at the moment. It's a 202 mile round trip, mostly motorway. Is that realistic in a BZ? I know they say that the range is over 300 miles, but from the little bit of reading I've done, that seems to be hopelessly optimistic.

We'd really like the Vision because the memory seats are so useful with 2 drivers (we're not interested the other Vision spec). BUT it's only available with the 20" wheels. We'd rather the 18" wheels, as we live in England and all the roads are heavily pot holed. Even worse than that, the range apparently plummets from 318 miles to 278 miles. So, my second question is: is this really true? Do you really take a 13% hit on range just because you have the 20" wheels?

We're in England, so the model would be FWD, 71.4KW.

Many thanks in advance if you can share some real world UK experience.

Pop the details of your journey into the Range Calculator and see what it says ...

I always work on a real world range of 2/3 of listed range in summer and 1/2 listed range in winter. That way you should get stranded

‘A better route planner’ is a great tool to plan EV journeys - give that a go. I find it very accurate for my Tesla.

it will suggest charging stops if needs be

Yeah that and zapmap are essential apps for any EV owner.

I drive a premiere edition with 20” wheels, AWD. I have tested the displayed range many times and now trust it. In the summer, the range is 250+, and the winter 220+.

When I am on a range critical drive, and I don’t want to stop, I switch on eco and drive at 60mph with no air con or heating, and I am pretty confident with the range.

Switching on heating or cooling hits it a bit, so if you are travelling 202 miles it might be a bit risky (but you are FWD, so not too risky).

if I was you, I would plug into a 3 pin socket when you get to your daughters, steal some of her electricity if you can while visiting, to give you a few extra miles!

(that’s what I do)

Also, plan a stop if needed and find a place you trust to be available so you don’t have to worry if things don’t go to plan.

Thanks all, especially Beyondzero for the real life feedback.

Things have moved on a bit. DD & partner live in a new build and along with the solar panels, it turns out that the house is equipped with a EV charger. As Homer would say "D'oh!"

Also my Toyota dealer has completely ghosted me (I've bought 10 Toyotas and Lexus from them previously), so have been tempted by the local Hyundai dealer offering me a rather nice EV6 Ultimate with a bigger Battery and, well basically every single option you could think of. I'm test driving it later...

I'm really embarrassed about the range of 250 miles with full charge because I have the same Bz4x Premiere Edition AWD, but I barely get 200 miles driving in mix-match condition. I'm still curious about your method of calculating range, as my vehicle displays an expected mileage of 229 miles on the digital screen when fully charged.

The 250 mile is the displayed range, as are all the numbers I have given. No calculations! Checks against the displayed range show it is reasonably accurate.
