Yaris Cross 2021 Interior lighting

Our car has a black headlining and no rear courtesy light so seeing stuff on the back seat or getting in and out in the dark is difficult.  I've fitted Philips led bulbs in the front courtesy lights and this has improved lighting in the front.  I intended to fit a light unit in the rear headlining, but cannot get a fish through to the front to draw a cable.  I removed the two plastic clips fitted roughly centrally to drop the headlining slightly but to had no success.  Besides insulation there appears to be  at leat one steel cross brace in the way.  Has anyone managed to get a cable through and, if so, how?

If you do a quick search on the Forum, I think I remember someone has done this and put a very nice VW light in the rear.  I'd love to do this, but for the amount of times we have people in the rear seats, it's just not worth the hassle.

I have a rechargeable touch light on each rear pillar should more light be required.

The 24 MY Yaris Cross has a rear interior LED light in the roof headlining - might be worth investigating further.

The front interior light is LED as well.

I too have a MY24 a YC PE with pan roof, Toyota rather than reposition it further back they kindly just deleted the ‘new’ rear overhead light. They also omitted to tell me when ordering, I let my feelings be known at hand over 😂.

that said even without the light the fact the pan roof removes 80% of the black headlining so it’s a much nicer place to sit.

In fact they just gave up this embarrassing, penny-pinching idea in the EU-spec models. I was also very disappointed (in 2022) as prior to my purchase I was watching a lot of interior photos showing a middle/rear dome light - from JDM models, I've learned - and I was completely sure that in a higher trim level, a hybrid awd-i cannot come without an interior light for that price tag, even if it is 'just' a Yaris (cross). I was wrong.

However, I decided not to hunt for that particular Toyota light, as the solution of @anchorman (Don) in that linked forum-thread showed a more likeable, low weight lamp, which seemed to be a better idea to cut into that dont-know-how-strong upholstery.

I opted for this article no. VW-group lamp: 5F0-947-109-C-9B9, which is a dark beveled LED lamp, matching the dark trim (the last 9B9 tells that) and also a suggestion: if you search for this as a Skoda part, it is even cheaper than the Seat, let alone the VW, which is 2-3 times more expensive. Same product. Same article-id. Funny.

So this way we complete what Toyota missed to. I hope they are spending that 2 euros for... infotainment software development, or the MyToyota app development, for example.

The beauty of that particular light is that it is designed to fit into upholstery and has a large strung clip.  It doesn’t need to be a perfect fit although snug is best and that clip “sucks” it up into the headliner.  The headliner is a stiff fibre matt backing with a soft fibre front that cuts easily with a Stanley knife.  I made an exact size cardboard template and after positioning, cut round it.  That big panel gives loads of access and the light works well with the standard or pan roof.

Yes, it is a perfect solution. Mine was made upon your idea too. Thank you for the description and the photos! 👍

I was thinking about 1) the original toyota dome light and 2) a lexus nx/ux dome light with reading lamps integrated, but both were too big, heavy and more complicated to fit, compared to your vw-group-lamp-idea, so I sticked with that. A little upgrade inside (the LEDs) and it makes well enough light maintaining a tiny footprint and weight.

iirc the oem one clips into the roof brace, the tricky bit it cutting the head liner

The headliner is easy to cut.  Soft enough to use a Stanley or craft knife but tough enough to resist the knife slipping.

Who the heck at Toyota thought that was a good idea? No wonder the interior is like a crypt.🙄

Some people prefer the black.

I would gladly swap my Yaris' interior for a black one - It's picked up so many marks in the 3-and-a-bit years and I can't fully get them out just with cleaners; Rubbers and those melamine-based magic erasers work, but I realized they are abrading away the surface of the doorcard flocking and "Vegan Leather" so I had to stop using them, but now it just looks horrible...!
