Stiff gear changing

We have a 2017 1.8 petrol manual avensis.  About a month ago there was a driveshaft seal leak which was replaced under warranty.  Since then the gear changing has not been as smooth.  To the point now when it is cold first thing it is tricky to get into 2nd/3rd gears - fine when warmed up.

I'm going to ring the dealership tomorrow to query (get booked in) but wondered if anyone had any thoughts (from what I've read low or incorrect gearbox oil (I understand it was replaced) are the most likely culprits but any other possibilities)?

Thanks.

Unless they've had to remove the gearbox from the car to change the seal (which seems very unlikely), the only part of the repair procedure that could have affected the gearchange is the oil.

It's booked in on Saturday.

That's my thinking. Going to push to have the oil replaced (again!) as nothing else will have changed. Struggled to downshift from 3rd to second at the bottom of our road this morning. Until the work the change was as smooth as anything I'd ever driven! Can't be a coincidence IMO.

They will have rummaged about and possibly moved the gear shift cables. If the cables are at an angle that can cause changes to be stiff and gears hard to slot in. They just need to take a good look and make sure the cables are mounted and routed as they should with no obstructions. Ideally, take the cable ends off the gear selectors, make sure they (the rubber bushes at the ends) are moving freely and put it back together.

Some dealers are known to use any gearbox they have in stock. One of the Toyota dealer did this to my previously owned Yaris. They put truck gear oil and it was extremely difficult to engage in any of the gears. The oil spec was stated in the invoice and I queried it and they denied it was the incorrect oil used. They said it was an incorrect entry in the invoice. They blamed the gearbox was faulty before they even changed the oil. Total lies. I then bought the correct oil and replaced the oil with my local independent mechanic and the gearshift was back to normal.

If it improves significantly when the engine/gearbox are warmed up thoroughly (about 20-30 minutes of driving) then yes, very likely the oil is the problem.

Agree with this. This was the symptom when the truck thicker oil was used in my Yaris.

If the above suggestions don't make a difference, move on to check the clutch slave cylinder. It is not a known failure point, but it is worth checking as a failing unit can lead to difficulty changing gears for cold.

Dealership looked car over but didn't find any issue (didn't expect them to when warm) but in fairness agreed to flush oil, cleaned meshes (?), cleaned something else and then filled with 75w LV all for free.

Can't ask for much more. We'll have to wait and see on the next cold morning.

That's very generous of them. To be commended. Gears are always stiffer when the oil is cold. Particularly first gear.
