Can anyone answer a query.I have a auris hybrid estate 1.8 on a 66 plate.I was talking to a Toyota dealer about a service, and then a salesman he said the newer cars have a better efficient hybrid system than my car? If so does anyone know which model & is it much better.I guess it's sales chat - thanks

He is correct, the corolla ts does have a better efficiency. Owners will post later on what mpg they get. I owned a Yaris gen 3 and now 4, it's about 10mpg improvement.

It depends what model you go for.
The Corolla is direct replacement of Auris and comes with two engine options.,  1.8 which is similar to what you have but slightly more efficient and 2.0 which is more powerful but slightly less efficient.
In general the fuels constantly highly dependent on how you drive the car and where you drive the car. The latest hybrids does have improved hybrid technology indeed and they are parts more efficient in town driving, where motorway high speeds, anything like 70+ mph the efficiency is very similar better all hybrids.
I have Auris from 2010 and it has been an excellent car with superb fuel efficiency and will not change for any new model just because of 5-10mpg  that might get more , or might not. Test driven Corolla and although i like it a lot it is not an actually a much better car and does not worth upgrading, but when Auris die will likely get a new Corolla.

The 23MY on Corollas have the latest 5th gen hybrid system.

Toyotas Hybrid system has been subject to continuous improvement. so the newer you buy the better it is going to be.  The 5th generation system is the latest although some new Yaris models are still using the 4th generation.

@JON DAVIES The main improvement in Corolla is the 4th gen hybrid system that improved even more in terms of reliability (300k miles+). Auris is also reliable if you maintain it well, 200k miles is not hard to reach especially with 2015 or newer engine revision.

The mpg is not the main upgrade, it is the safety sense 2 system, standard LED light, and radar cruise control in Corolla that makes me want to upgrade.

I have 2015 Auris and everything is fine at 110k miles, just regular oil change. The mpg is about 4.5L/100km circa 50mph in mixed driving sub urban area. Higher speed=higher consumption.  At 70 mph, typically it gets 5.5 L/100km and 80mph 5.9L/100km, 90mph >7 L/100km.

Radar cruise is so gooood

My colleague is torn as he likes lots of the new stuff on the new Corolla vs his Auris, but really really hated the ADAS beeping at him all the time when he had one as a courtesy car, and has been in my car when the AEB warning has been triggered or braked one side of the car to pull me away from a parked car (Thankfully no oncoming cars that time!), and a few times when it's cut accelerator input at junctions, all of which have been very off-putting for him. (Also he's an Audi person at heart and while he likes the Toyota reliability he's never liked the insides as he's used to that german materials feel.)

I think if ULEZ went away he'd be back in his old Audi A3 diesel in a heartbeat, but because all new cars have more and more of this stuff he can't really escape from it unless he keeps getting old cars!

@Cyker Your Audi-fans friend need a Lexus, not a Toyota. Probably Lexus ES or LC500.

ADAS works fine during my few thousands miles rentals Corolla, sometimes we just got a lemon. The keep lane assist is not that aggressive either unlike VW.   I don't have to fight to own  steering wheel control

We both would but Lexus only make big cars, and the used prices are higher (Probably because they work  )

The ADAS is working as designed - It's just what I was saying in another thread: They're built for an easy fictional world where there are much less cars and roads are big and wide. It just doesn't work in London, where you're frequently passing cars with inches of clearance either side, everyone's nose-to-tail gridlocked because there are too many cars and not enough road, and not helped by things like LTNs, cycle lanes taking away whole lanes and traffic light intervals of 3 seconds!

We are very fortunate to get Toyota in Europe because the used and new price are not sky high like in US and Asia.

Very often Toyota hybrid sold way above MSRP value. Even the Batman (Christian Bale) still drives his 2003 Tacoma/Hillux as his main daily vehicle.

I just visited California, NY city, and Portland this year. I saw plenty of Corolla 2003 roaming around and almost 50% big Taxi/Uber in NYC are Sienna hybrid. A giant living room with 35mpg/42mpg (UK).

300k miles +...  How many years would it take to cover that distance? (20+ years?) Maybe corrosion would kill the car before the engine dies.

don't know about Asia but in the USA a base Corolla hybrid starts ~$24,000, in the UK it is £30,500 which translates to ~$40000 ...

& from what I can see they don't depreciate in the US at the same rate that they do here (quite possibly because many of them are not driven off the roads as unroadworthy due to the lack of the equivalent of an MOT test)

You can never compare US prices with the UK, on any product. The US market is so much bigger, economies of scale are vastly different. The tax structure is different too.

believe me, I know (dual national). I was directly addressing the previous assertion though.

It's always interesting to see what things are cheaper/dearer here & there & postulate why.

Almost there 👌😅

I think prices are way too high in uk in comparison to all other countries. In Spain I checked the lease drakes are similar to uk 10 years ago, now here you can only buy a new phone for these amounts. Prices between countries should be compared by the buying power of the money not by numbers.

Any many years before the 2015 revised engine mentioned by Cyker!

Yes, you are probably right; it may take 20+ years, and many Toyotas still run over 20+ years in many parts of the world. I used to drive 20k miles a year in the US and now only about 12k miles per year in Europe. The reliability standard for Toyota and Honda is trouble free in their first 200k miles. Toyota cars are very good at rust protection in the past 15y, better than Benz. The trucks and body on the frame SUV are still susceptible to rust, underbody wash and woolfat coating may be necesary.

I think the 1st revision is 2013, but only on the head gasket. There is also TSB on 3rd generation hybrid for the EGR reprograming to reduce EGR clogging, but I am not sure when it was released. At around November 2014 , Toyota 2ZR-FXE engines have updated piston+piston rings design to reduce tendency of oil consumptions.  For all 3rd generation hybrid owners, cleaning EGR and intake valves is supposed to be part of maintenance every 100k miles to reduce clogged EGR and detonation from lack of EGR intake,  and head gasket failures.
