New Wheels Fitted...not Right

Bought a set of brand new 17" MOMO's 215/40/17 at the front and a 235/40/17 at the rear.

For starters they feel like they are going to come off! The judder feed back in the steering wheel is well unsafe! Can't really go over 60mph! Also the steering wheel which has an airbag is not straight when driving in a straight line.

Now is this because of tracking? Balancing? or wheel alignment?

Can someone explain what they reckon it could be? as I need to get them sorted very soon as I don't want impaired tyre wear.

I was told the wheels were balanced before they were put on the car.

who fitted the wheels? Did they fit the hubcentric rings? this rings go in between the axle hub and the alloy hub (since theyre normally different sizes) and they should be made of aluminium or plastic (aliminium is better).

You people will fit different sized wheels... then wonder why it drives/handles differently

sounds like a balanceing problem to me, ill balanceing would possible put the tracking out too (very very unlikely).

I would have taken them back to the supplyer immidiately!

What are
hubcentric rings
?

This might explain why mine is driving like a bag of spanners?

A large ring that is placed in the center of the alloy wheel this is a must

it says on the instructions this hub ring must be used.

:bookworm: :bookworm:

The tyres on am mr2 are different sizes this comes as factory its how it should be

215/40/17 at the front and a 235/40/17 at the rear is ok

Having say 235 front and back is not a good idea on an mr2 RW :)

Besides he 17" on front and back

215 on front

235 on rear

Where's the problem?

The problem is that that, even if the rolling radius at the front is the same, there is less rubber between the road surface and the front wheels resulting in an increased amount of feedback through the steering wheel, resulting in tramlining or "wheel wobble."

Lots of MR2s tramline terribly on 17s. Mine can be awful depending on the road surface.

yeah thats correct, generally though it shouldnt happen till you reach around 70-80mph when the P/S finally turns off.

Mine starts to get really crap at about 60, then again I havn't checked the alignment and tracking since I fitted the 17's. (Everything was perfect on stock 15s)

Nice feels fine, but hates the inside lane of M'ways where the trucks have put the grooves in ..

and the ride is "a bit" firm ..

I can drive over a 5p piece and tell you if it's heads or tails ..

i've been telling people for ages 16" is the biggest you want on an MR2 if 'driving' rather than 'cruising' is your thing. :)

Just had them looked at by a local specialised and they said the balancing seemed fine, its the hubcentric rings are missing - the place that fitted them didn't bother to check and fit properly!!

Had the wheel alignment done while I was there by this specialised and it was reported the car was well out! Now having that done it has corrected the steering wheel and improved the judder but its still there slightly at higher speeds so I'm going back to the place where I bought them from tomorrow to have the rings fitted. Then hopefully it will be done! phew!

you wont have them mate as your wheels are made to fit the hub perfectly.

Its just a plastic ring which fits in the centre of the wheel so it always sits

central on the hub.

The factory wheels dont normally have them. The wheel is made specifically to fit the hub properly. Aftermarket wheels have them because the wheel manufacturer doesn't know what size hub the wheel will be fitted to.
