I never had any probs yet with insurance or parts for my imported Curren (Celica Coupe) in fact with A Flux my insurance was 8 quid cheaper than a UK Celica.

ps. at £850 your either young or Banzai bad boy!!!! :D

I have a UK spec import When the insurance company asked me if it was an import, at the time I wasn't sure he insurance man then said well has it got the steering wheel on the other side I said No he then said thats ok then. But it is an import should I phone the insurance company and tell them? Is the car any different to UK one?

My car is a UK spec import Yaris T Sport

When I first got my GT back in '97 it cost me £800 to insure age 23. Now for the same car six years on I'm down to £335 with ATS Insurance.

I'm not really surprised at Martz's £850. Remember these are sports cars which are highly desirable, have 2.0 GTi engines and move a heck of a lot faster than a Ford Escort. And at 23 the insurers still consider you inexperienced even if you have been driving for five or six years. I tried argueing the fact I had been driving for six years when I was that age and all they could say was it will be cheaper when you are 25.

Try shopping around and maybe you will do better.

Jimma - i'm 23 with a 1997 Celica 2.0GT and 5Yrs NCD - Must live in a dodgy area :D

Yeah, it's got to be your age mate, cos I live in a place caleed Leigh Park which is a hole and a car criminals paradise as the Bill won't venture onto the estate very often, I pay about £500 with 3 yrs NCB. I also have a powerful air rifle and I don't give a s**t if they prosecute me for hurting one of these scum. I aim for the eyes!!

Pisses me off that they don't accept overseas no claims at Tescos. I have had my license and insurance for 15 years (since I was 15) with no claims. Now after moving to Mud Island I have built up a 1 year NCB (almost). My 32 car including 911's and WRX's at 21 mean nothing to them.

They can do whatever they want. Insurance companies are above the Government and the Law.

If you're gonna claim make it a good one. :P

I have a 1995 GT4 and the imports have very poor brakes in comparison, smaller disks and no 4 pot calipers due to japans speed limmits being so low. there are lots of problems like this but on the up side imports do come with folding electric mirrors as standard, mine cost £75 from a breakers yard.

my insurance with axamotor.co.uk cost £523 fully comp no claims protected, an import would have cost 1027 (not with axa they dont touch imports.) im 27 with 9 years ncd.

parts are a !Removed! to get for a brit car and much worse for imports so buy a uk speck you will save in the long run!

you may also want to bare in mind that some import parts are upto 12 weeks delivery. uk parts take 5 days max. fancy a 12 week walk? dint think so! B)

Okay my car isn't a celica but its a Jap import Starlet GT Turbo.

My personal experience has been excellent. For a start my car has far more toys than the UK equilivant.

Parts are easily accessable although buying form toyota does make it a bit more expensive. My main dealer can get everything with a maxium wait of 3 weeks, in general all my parts have taken no more than 3 days. Remember there is no UK equilivant of my car either yet everything is available. Plus if you've internet access it isn't to long till you've built up a database of different suppliers from all over the world.

Insurance can be a bit sticky. But there are firms who specialise in Jap imports Admirmal.co.uk and Elephant.co.uk spring to mind first and premuims are competitive.

Personally I will buy another Jap import especially if its just came out of Japan as they look after their cars and they haven't invented rust yet either.

The main reason I imported s beacuase there are tons of gt4's in Japan! They have a much better choice. I wanted a Carlos Sainz, but to get a clean low miles black 1 for under £4000 would have taken me ages to find or maybe never!! From japan I got 1 with 45, 000 miles! All the toys, insurance was £150 more than a UK spec through Elephant.co.uk, plus with Optimax fuel my beast is quicker than uk spec as mine is faster than my mates Carlos Sainz! :P

I have a Celica GT Jap import & my current insurance company wanted £496,so I went to Esure & got it for £382 fully comp, but with Esure you need at least 5 years NCD.

I have also heard that Tesco's are good, although when I tried their website was down.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't recall any insurance prob but Toyota UK don't profess much info on the 'extras' you get by buying an import but they recognise the popularity and do do spares for imports but prices can be high - of course they have to go wrong first don't they.

When i bought mine, it had an intermittent drive shaft/cv joint problem which is why the guy was selling it unknown to me but i went to yellow pages, sent shaft to UK Driveshafts in Birmingham I think it was an they were abs excellent and had it back to me virtually the next day.

My prob is the owner's Manual is all in Japanese - any readers out there as i don't know what the two switches relating to the 4 wheel steer are supposed to do but car is excellent, better than the UK spec - well pleased.

Cheers
