drill loads of holes around the edge of what you're cutting, then knock out the hole and neaten the edges with a file or a dremil .

My old Dad gave me some very good advice -

if it ain't broke - don't fix it

if you don't know how to do it - don't do it

Both of which I think apply here.

I'd just drill a line of holes (close together), then use a round file to open up the 'slot' then clean up the lines with a flat or triangular file.

It worked in metalwork at school!

2-3mm steel use a 'slicing disc', not a cutting disc in an angle grinder, slicing disks are 1-2mm thick depending on brand, cutting disks are 2-3mm thick. It will be like a hot knife through butter and is very controllable (just remember to watch both the front of the disk and the back of the disk at the same time)

Or get some long arm tin snips.

Anyway... isn't this the sort of thing where you take it to "a man who can", preferably a mate who'll do it for a pint?

might give that a go if I can get the lid off the box, dont think we have a slicing disc, what would happen if I used a cutting disc?

dont have long arm tin snips, car I just put bars on the handles of the normal tin snips

Your best bet is definetly 'Chain Drilling'.

Drill the series of holes smaller than you actually require.

Then open up the apature with a course file.

Finally dress with a smoother file to get a perfect fit.+
