Landcruiser 2.5td Vx Engine Trouble

My poor 1989 Landcruiser 2.5TD VX... its engine has died a death and I need advice as follows:

1. Any suggestions for suppliers of recon/second-hand engines.

2. The likely cost of a replacement.

3. What other toyota engines would do the job... if any

As I am not mechanicially minded at the moment the intention is that this engine replacement will become a personal summer project as opposed to paying squillions of quid to a garage to do the job for me. At end of project I should become mechanically minded... well that is the theory anyway!
