Sounds like piston slap, or perhaps shells.. its WELL loud . It also has a flapping type noise *occasionally* coming from the cam belt cover.. i took a peek under the belt cover (couldnt get it off properly and it was dark, and the belt seems loose.

Anyone come across this before? Any help would be great...

cheers

Checked this morning.. the cam belt is well loose and flapping about when it turns. Im assuming it has slipped and knocked the timing WAY out, anyone know if the avensis 1.8 is valve safe?

AArgh! Sort it quick. As i said on the other post, I hear it is not valve/cam safe. Don't be cruel to the poor engine!!!

Dont worry i havent driven it since i heard the noise, and i wont.. its being looked at next week. The knocking is LOUD, and if its not a valve safe engine then its pretty much certain its done some damage.. anyone know the price of a head rebuild :(

It appears its the tensioner bearing..and that was also what was creating the noise.

and also, it would appear, is the cause of low compression on one cylinder...no doubt due to a valve being hit.
