Belt Tenioner Went Crunch Last Night!

Morning dude's (and dudettes),

My car has been making a whining sound for a little while now, and I was pretty sure it was the alternator bearing on the way out, but last night I was on my way home from waork and it got louder and louder and then went "sccrrsshhh, crackkkk, pop!" and then the engine was really quiet.

I pulled over and took a look under the cover. Couldn't see much as it was dark and I didn't have a torch, but the power steering was ok, and I could see enough to see the belt was still spinning on the alternator! Weird!

I managed to get home ok (in fact it's the quietest my 2's run for ages) and got it into my garage. When I opened the engine cover this time I could see that there's what must be a tensioner bearing that had disintergrated, and the belt was running in what was left of it.

Any of you guys know how expensive this is to replace?

Thanks,

EarL.

Dunno, never needed to tighten the belt before

As you look down on the engine (cam belt side), on the right hand side beneath the intercooler pipe, the belt runs over what looks like it should be a tensioner. On mine, it looks like it's disintegrated, and the belt is now quite slack. :(

There was a thread about this on GT4OC site a while back.

You`ve got a couple of options. I think Mr T charges around £70 quid for the tensuioner assy. Apparently you can get them cheaper elsewhere. (Dont know where that would be though.) Or you can buy the bearing on its own from a bearing specialist. (NSK bearings are readily available, and thats whwt Toyota use) And if i remember right the actual bearing is around a tenner.!!! I`ll try and find the thread.

Sorry to hear that EarL.

Are you referring to the cam belt hydaulic tensioner?! Hope not. If you are though and haven't suffered the belt/teeth slipping it'll cost you about £35 for a new one from Mr.T.

Bit of a pig to get to properly though.

Hope all works out well bud. If I can help, I will. :)

Nah it's not the cambelt tensioner. The car runs perfect (all bar ahving a slightly sloppy belt). Haven't had a chance to take a pic as I've been up to my eyes the last couple of days.

I spoke to a local company (V-Spec Performance), and the chap there said to bring it in on Saturday morning and he's sort it out. He knew straight away what it was and said it would be around £30 for the part and about an hours work, so another £30 to fit it.

While it's in there, I'm having my HKS SSQ and boost controller fitted. Cant wait! :D

As ever, cheers for the info guys,

EarL.

On this note, if the cambelt on the 3SGTE does fail in someway is valve dammage common or is it a non interference engine? Thanks. (Sorry to hijack)

It's supposed to be non-interference. I believe someone on here had a cambelt break recently and it didn't cause any damage BUT I've heard that valve damage can still occur particularly if driving at speed when the belt breaks.

to tighten the cambelt you do turn the tenioner in a clock wise direction?
