No Power

Hi, hope someone can help. I have a 89 supra turbo with 74K. Recently it developed a rough idle and has no power. Spark plugs and wires are 25K old. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

any smoke at start up,

have you had the compression tested,

i recon either blown headgasket, or failed turbo

but i would look at changing the plugs and wires at least

need more info.. are you getting any error codes? The AFM sounds like a likely culprit but failing that yes you need new plugs/leads.

Thanks for the suggestions.

No smoke at startup, no error codes. Factory manual mentions the coils???Plugs and wires are (OEM) and only have 25K but will check when I start digging around. I do get a gas smell from the tailpipe, like a plug is not firing.

Thanks again for the suggestions. By the way did not put in my bio but I am from NYC. :D

OEM plugs can go bad if youre engine isnt running 100%. I had OEM toyota plats go bad within 100 miles due to using some bad fuel.. so dont rule out plugs. Start off by replacing the cheap items such as plugs and leads, then think about AFM and coil packs.

Adi,

Thanks for the thoughts...Will go with the cheap items first. Will let you know what happens.

Thanks again.

  • 7 months later...

Just a quick update. It turned out to be a bad valve cover gasket that was leaking oil all over the rear sparkplugs. The last plug near the firewall was actually totally covered, and was not firing. Installed new gasket and the car is now fine. :)

First think I'd check is the caveties atound the sparkplugs, -just pull the HT leads out and chances are you'll find a bit of oil in there... its very common on the 7M-GTE engines -and damn irritating <_<

Learnt this in the forst day of supra ownership, had a mega flooded 7M-GE  usually just re seating the rocker cover seals and giving the area a bit of a clean sorts it  can be a pain getting the oil out of the "cavities" Tho!!!!!
