Carina Servicing

My 1.6 Carina E is comming up to 70,000 miles and it's due for a Service. I understand I'll need to get the cam belt changed. Does anyone have any idea what this might cost and should I ask for other things to be done at the same time?

I'm in the Oxford area.

Had it done on my old car but couldn't coment on the cost for the Toyota.

I need mine doing soon as it goes,

You'll be wanting the tensioners replaced at the same time I believe but that should be done anyway. :)

Getting it done at a dealer will cost you £150-200 + vat

You may get a better deal by having them both done at the same time, service & cambelt

Platinum plugs get replaced at 60k too, so if they havent been done then thats another £70 ish!

My advise is to shop around & play dealers against each other for prices, they tend to lower them if they know they have competition.

Alternatively, find a local mechanic. He will do Cam belt, tensioners & plugs for a fraction of dealer prices. Friend of mine quoted £70 labour + parts.

I had my Carina done about a year ago at 60K - used a main dealer - £275 for cam belt, valve clearance check, full service, platinum plugs. The cam belt only is listed on the invoice as £120.

Hi, I'm new to all this as I've just bought a 1989 Carina II GL. I've been advised to change the belts as soon as possible to be safe, but is it a job for the DIYer? Bearing in mind that you don't seem to be able to get a manual for this model, either! Any advice would be much appreciated. :)

I wouldn't advise it as a DIY job, tho a friend seems convinced that the 1.6 is an easy one to do.

I'm getting an independant to do my 3S-FE timing belt (toyota parts) next saturday. :)

Contrary to popular belief, there is a manual available for the Carina II.

This can be obtained direct from your Toyota Dealer.

Quote: Toyota 4A-F, 4A-GE Engine repair manual

Issued under: Part Number: RM063E

Price £15.52 plus VAT

It is an excellent reference giving detailed information on changing the Cam belt.

It is a relatively straight forward task. I didn't need any specialist tools to do the job. All that's really required is:

(i) Two bits of drilled steel rod to bolt onto the pulley wheel - to brace it in position in order to slacken the pulley wheel bolt.

(ii) a length of scafold pipe to put over your breaker bar to increase leverage.

Just recently had my cam-belt done at the Toyota main dealers in Bristol. Both Toyota dealers in Bristol quoted the same cost at £180. This was on my '98 Avensis with the 1.8ltr 7A-FE engine.

I didn't fancy doing it myself as it looks a bit cramped down the side of my engine. The price was the same regardless of whether it was done with the service or not, so I got the belt done a month later after the next pay-day (I reckoned I was safe seeing as I only had 64000 miles on the clock).

I was quoted £80 for the Iridium plugs with the service and decided to shop around and fit the plugs myself. In the end I went for Paltinum plugs from Halfords at half the price. Maybe a false economy, but it's a little easier to swallow.

Did the Carina-II have the same engine as the Carina-E (and Avensis)?

My Carina II has the 4a-f 1600 engine.

On the subject of manuals, there is a Peter Russek manual available @ Amazon, the guy at my local spares shop says they're very good. Anyone used one?

Thanks for the heads up on the Toyota manual, too. Are they available off the shelf or does the dealer have to order them in?

Cheerz!

pretty sure the Carina E and the Avensis had the 2.0l 3S-FE engine that my Carina II's got.

Re: the Manual;

My dealer initially said there wasn't one available. I contacted Toyota UK who wrote back giving me the details.

My dealer then orsered one - took about 3/4 days to arrive.

Just a quick update. I ordered the manual on Thursday & they said they would have it for me by Saturday! I've been away for the weekend, so I'm picking it up on Tuesday. (next day off!)

Cheerz!
