(SUPERCUSTOM 2.4 TD)

hi all

appreciate some thoughts on this,

have a 2.4td thats gives a blast of black smoke on startup, only

after left for a day or so, then the rest of the day starts and runs

clean. (sometimes more of a cloud)

does not overheat, no oil in water or water in oil, reving when hot

does not cause water to spurt out of filler top, (actually level goes

down). no blue smoke

dont know much history as just purchased, could this be worn fuel

injectors??

any suggestions welcome

regards andy

black smoke is not a problem as all that it means is that your car is running a bit rich at start up which is common for diesels. if it bothers you that much get it retuned and put in a new air filter.

if a car runs rich you will get a bit of black smoke or soot more to the point. if its a blue white smoke then yes it could be valves or cylinders as it would indicate oil burning but if you get a white steam like smoke thats condensation in the exaust . so if you dont know the answer say noting as we are trying to save each other money not waste it.

Black smoke on start up especially with a TD engine is normal - Just the Cold Start Fuel Enrichment working.

If you get excessive smoke when driving/accelerating then check :

Air filter is not dirty.

Fuel Filter clogged (tends to give out white smoke above 2000rpm)

Diesel pump timing (black smoke - advanced timing, white smoke - retarded timing)- Has Cam Belt been changed recently ??????

Excessive black smoke when accelerating - Full load Injection Volume too high (you will get black smoke when you first accelerate but should reduce after that)

Hope some of this helps
