Corolla Porous Oil Sump

I've been told by my local service centre that my oil sump is porous on my '97 corolla and will need to be changed. Apparently this is a long-ish job and therefore an expensive job as the exhaust needs to be removed. Can a sump really become porous and leak oil? Or am i being conned? This is news to me. :help:

On an older car yes a sump can become rusty and inturn develop corrosion holes and thus leak (Yugos and Fiats around ten year old suffered from this).

An even older car won't though (Such as a Morris Minor or Ford Anglia) as it has enough oil leaks on the engine (which I think must have been standard :wacko: ) to thus stop the sump from rotting in the first place. :lol::lol:

In your case though I would be suspisious! ...do they mean a leaking sump gasket...and with a Toyota at your Corollas young age I would still be suspect of the garage.

Tell the garage to show you (be firm but polite).

yes its true crap fiats etc leak but aint heard of it on a toyota??mines 20 year old and still strong,is it a reputable firm of a monkey with a spanner(no offence)?? :D

Have owned and serviced Toyotas for over 20yrs ( am I that old)and have come across this problem in the passed. A friends "D"plate 1.3GL with 176,000 on the clock is on sump watch as it is looking dodgy. I have chaged one sump and seen many corroded ones. As stated it's because they do not leak, so any flaking or damage to the thin paint coating will allow corosion to take place. Ask to have a look first, but it does happen. This is down side of owning a car that leaves your drive clean!!!

Just for info - changed the oil on my 1998 Avensis 1.8 7A-FE and scraped some rust of my sump - you guessed it, it's now "porous". After 189k, I suppose it's done its time. Will probably have to get a new one (£85) or "pre-enjoyed" at £50.
