Hi there, I'm new to this forum and you all seem like a jolly bunch so I though i'd pick your collective brains.

In my infinite wisdom and upcoming pay rise I've decided to get myself a Gen 6 GT4, but details of the car on the net other than the rally version are abit dubious at best.

From what I been able to gleam there where 3 variants on the theme for the Gen 6

The GT4 WRC

The pre 96 GT4

and the post 96 GT4

from what i've gathered the post and pre 96 cars are the same bar different front bumpers lights and rear wing post 96 wing being a 3 strut affair.

Where there any other differences or was that it?? Also is the big WRC style wing still a direct swap on the post 96 cars as with the earlier ones?

Also what was the difference between the normal GT4 and the WRC version read somewhere that the WRC cars have anti-lag all be it disabled as standard.

Another thing i've seen is some with 4 pot front calipers and some without, where these add on's or WRC cars?

Last but not least from what I can tell these cars are pretty much bomb proof, but keep seeing mention of ss suspension which needs replacing around 70k, what is this, anyone have any technical drawings I can have a look at as if It needed doing I probably change it meself, not afriad of a bit of dirty hands see.

Thats about it, I await your joyful response.

Hi mate, good choice, Ive got a SSII and a UK ST205

for most of your answers go-to WWW.ST205.NET a great site on where to learn

about all the types of GT4!! and as for the SUPER-STRUT its the only pain that us

GT4 owners have!! if your car is making any creaking or cracking or any type

of noise from the front end its probally the SUPER STRUT! if your car is on the 60-70 thousand miles which most import are, it probibly need sorting, cost if you do it your-self is about £600-700 for both sides, but to be honest the best place for all you questions is THE GT4 site WWW.GT40C.COM

Thanks for the links guys them is great sites and there's a link in one to another site which has just the details I was after about the superstruts nice photos and everything.

Just one other question I've seen lots of mention on here about a fig 8 peice on the suspension is that the small plate that links the lower support members and that the hub body sits on?? :D

no it a chunky looking thing that joins the strut to the bottom control arm , it has 2 ball joints built into it.

You mean the steering knuckle, the big chucky thing on the left in the second line of photos on the above page?

nope, you can't really see it well in those pics, but look along the red line, that's the track control arm no 2 (also wears out). Halfway up that sticking out to the right is the camber control link or 'fig 8', so named because it looks like a fig 8!

Right I'm going to look at a GT4 tomorrow it's a UK car N-reg with 78k mile on the clock, full service history. Other than the superstrut, clutch and checking for rust and turbo condition (smoke etc) is there anything else I specifically need to check for?

I think you`ve got it all covered. Just make sure everything works as it should. These cars are incredibly tough so neglect can be hard to spot. Good luck. Hope it`s a good `un.:thumbsup:

PS. dont forget service history. :D

Good luck mate! as above, but the main prob is the SUPERSTRUT, If its not done, allow for maximum fix cost, which is over a grand for a good gararge to sort! have a very good look at the panels and paint for accident damage AND DONT FORGET THE HPI!!! let us know how you get on!!

Cheers guys i'll let you know how I get on. Anyone know how much the parts are for the superstrut as I would probably do it myself rather than paying someone else to do it. Managed to rebuild engines in the past so I should be able to manage a couple of suspension parts.

allright mate, Ive heard the SUPERSTRUT can be a bit fiddley, but if your capable, Its not too bad!! as for parts £600-700 for the both sides, if you do it yourself! like I said be very wary of accident damage! and try not to buy the very first car you see, as thes a few about! UK are harder to find though

Well guys, in the next couple of weeks i'll be picking up my very own GT4, it's an ST205 GT4 N-reg 78,000 miles with sunroof and WRC Spoiler blocks, last owner changed superstrut, cambelt and clutch so thats all be sorted, full toyota service history by garage that supplied it, except for the last service which was done at an independant toyota specialist.

Engines really smooth and not a sign of any sort of smoke what so ever. Black UK car, no sign of any damage checked all round the sills under chassy etc all body parts look original and in really goood condition as is interior, much better than an import I also looked at that had supposedly only done 50,000 miles. It's getting oil + filter change and new front brake pad (which was the only thing I could find fault with) + new MOT as current one runs out in a couple of months.

Just can't wait to pick it up now.
