Do Your Police Workout Or What?

This is going to sound funny and I'm hoping no one takes offense to this, but I've noticed the several times I've been to England that your police seem to be considerably less brawny then ours.

Our cops are usually pretty muscular and workout constantly, some of the older ones are fat, but still brawny underneath it. When I've been to England and even the English police I've seen on the TV on the news etc, they all look pretty lanky and have skinny arms and look about as menacing as a cupcake. Even when they wear those sweaters with the little shoulder pads, they aren't very intimidating at all.

Add to that they don't carry firearms, right? At least the downtown London cops don't.

Uh... that's all I have. I'm just wondering how these guys take down criminals when they look like they weigh about 60kg soaking wet. It looks almost as if they deliberately don't choose big guys, because I know all of you don't look like that.

Maybe we just have more psychotic and dangerous criminals here and our police are more aggressive?

How is it that I've never seen even one brawny looking English cop though.

The same reason you don't see that many brawny members of our armed forces. Brain not brawn and training for fitness and stamina.

I'm assuming it is just harder for criminals to get them as well there, so they aren't needed?

We are firearm crazy in this damn country. Even though the police are armed, they many times come up short because the criminals have more firepower or automatic weapons. It's pretty ridiculous.

Well I must admit, I don't see the point of police being armed if the bad guys get the bigger and better guns. We do have armed response units for use in those incidents where people are armed.

You may be surprised how many Police are armed but it’s not in your face macho BS like some countries.

Yes, our Police are well reserved and do a very good job.

Crime Watch UK on Bravo is pretty funny when you get 5 coppers trying to cuff a drunk!

But nah, english cops dont need guns, they're normally arresting chavs and pikEs which run away, so they need stamina and need to be light and able to run after them

and IF the criminal has guns, then the cops call for backup with bigger guns lol.

Our police have to be more "athletic". Athlete's are usually much taller and thinner, rather then big brute's. This is because they have to do a lot of running and jumping over walls, etc... which requires speed and stamina.

Yeah, your Constitution means that every :censor: is allowed to legally own a firearm - and this is why you get kids going into their schools and gunning down their friends and teachers.

There's hardly any gun related crime in the UK (All things relative of course) And to be fair, most of our bobbies can probably handle themselves perfectly well, they are well trained, and just because they aren't "Beeeeefcaaaaake" doesn't mean they aren't strong!! And apparently they use their heads before going in All Guns Blazing, so to speak...

You don't need to be built like Arnie to point a speed radar device. The new one's are so light and ergonomic that a child could do it - A feeble child with a calcium deficiency who hasn't eaten for days !

More and more of our officers over here are firearm trained now though. It's sad but getting necessary. There are hotspots for Gun crime around the country, but it's not countrywide - hopefully it never will be.

To qualify for particular careers within the Police force, you have to under go a rigorous training regime and meet certain criteria. Don't underestimate someone who looks small/thin - stealth & stamina can be far more effective than brawn, especially when a situation requires diplomacy.

I think the english police should beef up a bit and be given powers to beat the living s :censor: t out of all the little chav/pond-scum/theiving pikey kids. Let them learn fear and respect that way - coz their folks aren't teaching it to them!

Well, what's the average weight of an American - compared to a brit?!

Saying that, we're catching up - at least I'm doing my bit.

A couple of my mates have joined the police, and they're both bigger than me, and so are the other officers I've seen them working with. I'm 6'1" and 16 stone (225lbs ish - might be wrong!), so in my experience policemen are fairly big.

Haven't been to America to to compare them - and I'm assuming it wouldn't be fair to use the stereotypical fat lazy stupid donut eating examples on tv?!
