Just had a new short engine for my Avencis 1.8 VVTi SR which was using excessive oil. By the way, my local main Toyota dealership were very supportive in obtaining a new short engine on my manufacturers original 3-year warranty.

Anyone know what the latest thinking is with respect to running a new modern engine ? In my old Ford Escort days back in the late 70's/early 80's, we used to go through a routine involving running the engine at varying revs for varying periods of time/miles so that the bores didn't glazed over and the rings bedded in correctly. We also used to use a quite poor grade of oil for the first 1000 miles & more to give the rings/bearings chance to bed in.

Anyone know the correct way to run in a modern engine ?

Hi,

From my experience just treat them gently. Drive it like its a new car that you have just collected from the showroom and spent nearly 20k on! Don't labour or race them for 1st 1000 miles. :yes:

Then have an oil and filter change with the correct grade at 1000 miles or 1 month, whicever sooner. :thumbsup:

This will ensure longivity and reliability. It also gives you a chance to check for any leaks or problems that may have occcured when changing the block, like harness routing, coolant leaks, loose engine mount bolts or other bolts, hydraulic leaks etc..

Don't forget EVERYTHING came out including gearbox, driveshafts, harness connections etc.. in a short engine replacement.

After you have done 5000 miles, when you change the oil put 750 ml can of Slik50. You'll have the quietest and smoothest engine on the planet.........

I've been a avid supporter of the stuff for 20years. ......

Try and keep revs between 2,000 and 4,000 -- too low is also too much strain. Handbook says don't tow for 500 miles. Also don't labour the engine by accelerating with your foot on the floor or using high gears on a steep uphill. Vary your speed for even conditioning, so crusie control is certainly out. Basically, drive normally but be gentle.

On a new car, the oil contains cleaning agents. Either way, it is recommended (not mandatory) that oil and filters are changed between the first 1,000 and 3,000 km to get rid of dirt and rubbish, little bits of metal wear etc. After this point it's safe to say that you can drive freely.
