I have an 04 registered XT4. According to the manual, the towing specs are as follows:

Engine________________Drawbar load_____Towing Capacity (On gradients up to 12%)

_____________________________________With Brake_____ Without Brake

1ZZ-FE (1.8L Petrol)_______75Kg__________ 1000Kg________500Kg

1AZ-FE (2L Petrol)________75Kg___________1500Kg________640Kg

1CD-FTV (2L Diesel)________75Kg__________ 1500Kg________640Kg

Hope that is readable? Sorry had to use underscores to get the spacing correct as the forum reformats multiple spaces!

Hope that helps smile.gif

Thanks for the information - have you or anybody had any problems towing -- I have a diesel avensis (2003) and use it to pull a caravan with a max gross weight of 1100kgs - I was in France two weeks ago and the dual mass flywheel went - people have since told me that toyotas are not designed to tow and that the flywheel going is a common fault with diesel engines , especially when towing. I wanted to buy a slightly heavier caravan , and didnot want to change to another make of vehicle , so thought that a Rav4 would be ideal. ( I would be gratefull if any one has any info)

The flywheel is the same part number for the Rav and Avensis

We have replaced flywheels several times on Avensis and twice on Rav4

Approx 50,000 miles

Not sure if the 2.2 Rav when it comes will be any different

Its an issue but a rare one. And out of all of them, all the Avensis were Taxi's and on Rav was used as a driving school car !

I trust you do realise that with a RAV you can not open the back door when you are hitched up!

On following website you can calculate different cars with different caravans.

http://www.caravantrekker.nl/index.php

http://www.caravanclub.nl/trekauto/tavhj20...02.0%20D4-D.pdf

Hopefully this helpfull.

My experience is good. I tow a Dethleffs Camper 450 DB max 1200 KG

I normally drive at 100 km/h sometimes 110 km/h. I think more than 1200 kg is to much to drive smooth.

And there is always the TTE performance kit www.TTE.de

The rav4 diesel version was top in its group on the Caravan Club best tow car 2003.
