My Poor Turbo.......ahhhhh (advice)

Hello All,

You may remember my post below

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php...2000&highlight=

In a nutshell I was taking my car for a burn up and I noticed complete loss of power, and subsequent turbo failure. I thought this may have

had something to do with my recently fitted Bailey's BOV. But I don't think that's the case

I took my car into a local mechanic. He's a nice guy but to be honest he probably isn't the hottest on MR2's. It's been a bit of an education with me telling him where to look, and sending him various pictures of the CT26 Turbo. Anyway when he finally took out the turbo he suspected a part was missing and it looks like he's right!

Basically the other impeller wheeel on the exhaust side is not there!!

Doing some research of found the below pic of what the turbo should look like

Ct26ExpandedParts.jpg

It looks like the turbine shaft has broken. Doing some more research I heard this is quite common? Is this true?

http://www.fensport.co.uk/partsfiles/st205tuning.htm

"The CT20 series turbo have 1 common problem - the turbine shaft is prone to breaking - therefore all our uprated CT20 turbos are fitted with a larger steel turbine shaft"

I have ordered a 2nd hand CT26 Turbo from the affiliates section(IMOC), and hopefully this item should be fitted next week sometime. My question is.......is this in anyway to do with my Bailey's BOV? Or was this just co-incidental?

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php...der=asc&start=0

What can be done to prevent this shaft from snapping?

Was it just my turbo's time to go bang?

I'd appreciate some informed responses.

I also intend to keep my broken turbo and possibly rebuilt it at a later date!

I wouldn't say it's that common... in fact, if it was, you'd have got more help by now.

The CT20 may well have a 'weak' shaft... but it must have lasted your motor 10 years+ so you can't really complain. Toyota are not turbo specialists as such. Of course Fensport can improve on the original design by fitting steel internals and a stronger shaft, but Toyota designed it to work sufficiently for a more than adequate amount of time.

There's not a lot you can do to stop your shaft from snapping, apart from looking after it in the first place. Always let the oil and turbo warm up before getting it spinning at 100,000+ rpm... and just as importantly, let it cool down sufficiently. Don't let the turbo sit there boiling in it's oil.

I'd say there wasn't much you could have done, as you don't necessarily know how the car has been driven, looked after and serviced for it's life before you.

While the turbo's getting replaced, check the oil feed pipe. If that's blocked, or even a bit clogged up, that could have led to oil starvation and hence more damage.

Just be sure once fitted the CT26 to look after it with oil changes every 2500-3000 miles with good quality oil.

With regards to the Bailey BOV... I'd bin it. Get yourself a decent one if you must have one. Worth reading into BOV's on Rev1's and 2's though with the AFM. Bailey dump valves can seize (several people I know have had this issue). If your car was unable to dump the gases through the Bailey BOV or the stock re-circ, the air would have gone straight back through the turbo, trying to spin it the other way (hence turbo stall) which could have put stress on the shaft and hence caused it to break... who knows...

IMO it won't have been the BOV that caused it.....Jesus is right, you don't know how the car was treated prior to you buying it. I wouldn't say its a common thing either. Some of the ST205 & ST185 GT4's came with ceramic turbos with steel internals.....there is a down side though, ceramic spools up quicker....and not that I've driven a steel quiped one but those I know who have say it does indeed boost a little bit later than the ceramic ones. My car is 12 years old, done 120,000 km'e and for the last year i've been boosting 17 psi, no problems yet (touch wood) but I kow who owned it before me and how it was looked after, so yeah....maintanince has a pretty big effect. You may want to take the oppertunity to get yourself a ct20b ;) everything done right you would have the potential to break into the 12's with a 20b :)

Cheers

Thanks for the responses

Your right...I am not 100% sure of it's service history. I bought the car of a member of an owners club though and he advised me of the regular oil changes.....but who knows

I am going to flog the BOV on eBay and just keep it standard for now

Just want my '2' back on the road!

I have blow two turbos.

Oils seals went in the 1st (probably original turbo)

and blew the exhaust side compressor wheel off the second one. (muppet...that was a seconds hand one, which i can only assume was abused !!)

Now i have an uprated ct26 with steel internals.

Yes they do spool up latter, but mine now has a bigger compressor wheel and pulls much harder at the same boost levels as stock.

well worth upgrading.

I also have a Bailey BOV...no issues with that as far as i know ! i reocn my second tubo blew becuase i was tight and had a bleed vlave fitted, and i recocn it was over spooling, so blew it !

compared to a standard CT26.....I'd still take a stock ct20b over an upgraded ct26 ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I finally got my car back guys and what a !Removed! palava fuelled Drama!

Basically....Turbo Went

Bought a used CT26(£150)

Took it to a local garage to fix it.

Local Garage were a bunch of monkeys and I had to instruct them on what to do. They kept my car for 2 weeks

and charged me £300 for the pleasure (To be fair impeller wheel had smashed into teeny bits and the guy had to remove exhaust and cat)

Got the car back and it was like an old dog! The mechanic funked up my idling and the car stalled for fun

So much so that I had an embarassing moment at a set on traffic lights on a hot sunny day! Car failed to start and had to be towed!! :(

Gave up and went to Mr T (Western Toyota, Edinburgh) instead of taking it back to Bodgit&Scarper Mechanics

They sourced the problem as a dodgy Timing Belt....£200 to fix it. And the car started a treat

Also had a full service and compression check.....the car is NOW running like a dream. Idles properly, accleration is lovely

purrs like a cat

So the moral of the story is? I don't know...you tell me

All I know is that I am £900 lighter and can't afford to go on a summer holiday :(

Oh well...at least I have my '2'

And hear the story ends....thanks for everyone's help
