Heavy Steering

I have a New Corolla 2 litre Diesel Colour Edition. It has not done 2000 miles and i have sent it back to the dealer twice with Heavy steering and pulling to the right. I must be the worst car i have ever had, and i have had many new cars.

The dealership have failed to find a problem and have simply returned the car back to me with no explanation.

On a long journey my wrist possitively aches with having to keep the steering straight.

Are any other users having a similar problem. ?

Probably just a one off mate, don't let it put you off buying a Corolla again, I'v not had any problems with mine.

Maybe try taking it to another dealer to check it out and get the head mechanic to take it for a drive with you. If there is a problem a decent mechanic will find out what it is.

Good luck mate.

My first thought is possibly a bad steering computer... I'm pretty sure your car has the variable power assisted steering (assist decreases with engine speed or vehicle speed... not sure which it is on the Corolla).

I don't know what modern day corollas are like but in most cases I would say that it could be: The tracking, power steering or (most probably checked) the tyres. There are probably other reasons which i've overlooked but heavy steering is usually something quite simple

Thanks for the reply, not sure if related but the Visual Dislpay telling me how many miles to the gallon the car is doing is very irregular. Often shows 99.9 mpg, could this be linked ?

I guess, the mpg display is ok - I tried to swith to non-metric today, and got same 99.9 mpg which is usually displayed as 0.0 L/100km. In manual there is warning the instant values can be inaccurate. This 0.0 happens on my manual transmission when torque is applied to wheels (i.e. I put in gear), but there is no acceleration. Surely, it is not accurate, but it is nice to think my car consumes zero when I roll down the hill putting in gear :) I guess same happens on automatic transmission when torque is still transmitted to wheels but accelerator is depressed - before engine goes to idle.

As to steering problem, I experience about the same problems on my new corolla since the beginning. It pulls slightly left or slightly right - actually if I let it it go free, it goes straithforward only for 2-3 seconds, then pulls right or left. Fortunately, I do not drive on motorways, but I can imagine the wrist pain such a driving would give.

I reported this issue to dealer at 1000km service, and they kind of accepted this, but they said I need to apply as a separate case, and I did not do that yet. The check of wheel angles (wheel camber) that I did on my own showed values within the boundaries. Surely, tire pressure has been checked few times. My corolla uses electrical powersteering, so I suppose it may be tuned slightly improperly. By the way, the collegue of mine who owns corolla for couple of year, told me that he experiences same problem, though so subtle that he had never noticed that before I told him. The other customers I asked in Russian corolla forum say steering is all right, no pulling.

Makes me unhappy indeed. My 6yrs Ford Escort has many problems, but it grips the road like a train.

I wonder if there is some TSB (service bulletin) on the issue - if your dealer is good and friendly, you may ask to show it.

Good luck,

Maxim
