Brake Warning Light/squeaky Brakes

I have a '96 Corolla 1.6 Si, and the rear brakes make an awful lot of squeaking when first used. If I drive slowly and apply the handbrake gently, there's loads of squeaking, which usually goes away quite quickly after doing that.

When I chuck the car quickly round a roundabout, the brake warning light sometimes comes on on the dasboard, but it's not something I can reproduce often.

When I execute an extreme emergency stop, the brake warning light always comes on.

I have checked the front pads and the rear shoes, and they have loads of life left in them, and the brake fluid reservoir if topped upto max, when the car is cold and hot.

Anyone think I have a major problem, or is the light normal? The squeaking may be down to the drums, I suppose.

Hi -

The brake light coming on while all checks have been done, could be a faulty float-switch in the brakefluid reservoir.

The squeaky brakes is probably residue inside the drums.
