Double Clutch

If i understand it correctly.............

When you change gear, say from second to third for example, you press the clutch, disengage second into neutral, lift the clutch then press the clutch again and select third.

Or I might have been thinking of 'Double Dutch' :D

It's how you change gear when you don't have syncros in your gearbox.

Or when your synchros are shot :D

My dad often boasts about being to drive a car with no clutch.

Yer its called an automatic

Double clutch means you have 3 clutch plates instead of two, so its easier to get in gear, its usally used in very very powerful cars

No,

if you can get the revs right, the car slips into gear, easy going down gear...

Had to do it in my mini all the way to scotland!

I agree with the first reply -- the act of double-clutching, often used when synchros are shot, is where you go from in gear, clutch in and into neutral, then clutch out, then clutch in again and into new gear. In other words you lift your foot off the clutch pedal and put it down again in between gears, as opposed to keeping it down all the time.

It's more than possible to change gear without a clutch -- you just have to have the revs right. That's the tricky part and I wouldn't go practising with a new car.

on Motorbikes, however, no clutch gear changes are a doddle. ( changing up anyway )

Open the throttle to accelerate. Then when you want to change up a gear just quickly back the throttle off whilst simultaneously kicking the next gear in. Nail the throttle and carry on ! saves all that nasty wear and tear on the clutch.

its easy to drive with no clutch but the true skill comes with doing it with spirited driving, when you can change gear faster than using a clutch and dont let the revs drop below power band! i had to learn when i snapped my clutch cable on my cavalier. and i had to learn how to double clutch for my psv test! only double clutch when accelerating, not needed when goin down the gears!

also a good technique to keep the car in the power band as you can blip the throttle when the g'box is effectively in neutral to raise the revs and then change up

i was shown how to do it in a MK2 Escort then tried it in the Yaris and nearly left the road

good when and if you master it
