I posted a meesage about Rav4 tyres elsewhere on the 4x4 forum without realising that this forum existed. I have got a 2005 RavXT3 and i have found that it is fitted with Toyo Tranpath tyres. My preivious Rav had Bridgestones fitted, and Every Rav i have seen , both old and new have had Bridgestones fitted. A motor dealer friend tells me that Toyo tyres are cheap imports and much inferior to the Bridgestones. Has anybody got these fitted, or have I been palmed off with inferior tyres. I have been in touch with my dealership and Toyota and they have said they will make enquiries.

I have a new Granite with Pirelli Scorpian STR's 235/55 x 17

I have heard great things about Toyo's (certainly, they were given very positive reviews by the Puma Owners Club) so I wouldn't be at all upset if I were you :)

I suspect that Toyota (as indeed will any car manufacturer) will put on suitable and appropriate tyres based upon the deals/discounts/incentives that they are getting from the tyre manufacturer.

It is a fact that on a (from) new car, the vast majority of owners will, out of choice, replace worn tyres with the same make and preferably "model"/tread pattern.

Car:- RAV4 D4D MY 2002.(Jan 2003)

Bought new with Toyo Tranpath 215x70x16 99H A14 M+S fitted.

Milage to date 41,000 miles.

Thread remaining 3-4 mm. all round.

Speed vary from 0-110mph.(in France, Spain and Portugal).

Acceleration gentle to brisk.

Braking gentle and adequate for the occasion, seldom harsh.

Performance in wet was excellent, noise acceptable, no off roading except on grass

No snow experience but the M+S stands for mud and snow.

Tyres showing signs of age now but good for another 5k I would say.

In for service next monday and will consider replacing with similar if I can get exactly the same.

That's interesting; black-circles has a special offer on Bridgestone Dueler D687's at £101.03, but the normal price is listed as £86.53.

Don't think I'll be taking that special offer then

The cheapest i can by BridgEstones is £70.00 :) , thats using the Gold members discount. The company www.mytyres.co.uk have a trade side, and the TOC has a good deal going with them, all you need to do is get the tyres fitted (as they are mail order ), that would add up to a tenner to the overall cost ....£80.00 fitted seems a good price to me  .

That's a good discount then!

Actually yeah, those Toyo's are awfull.

I'm gonna buy some proper car style ones, I hate 4WD style ones. And i'm sure they are noisier.

I also feel road tyres could be the way to go, just so long as the side wall of the tyre, is still good for a bit of curb bumping :) .

Have a quick look at the Falken ZE-512 on black circles. They look well smart for such a cheap tyre. That's the sort of look i'm going for.

I presume you can put normal tyres on a car like this?

I may order those, good write up for a cheap set.

Not sure to be honest, Shutty may have the answer, he works for Toyota

Well spotted! That's very informative. So it looks like i'm looking for the on road luxury section of tyre then if it's tyre noise that bothers me.

I still haven't figured out what the difference is between these and normal car tyres. It would be nice to have conclusive evidence as to why I can't fit car tyres. Because to be honest, they're cheaper!

It's such a difficult choice! I'm not interested in brand, just that it is quiet.

I've noticed that the 235/60/16 tyre has the number 100H or 100W afterward it, i can only think this is to do with it being a tyre for a suv 4X4 vehicle.

Take a look on www.mytyres.co.uk and see what mean :) .

Here are some details about tyre markings:

Sidewall Markings

185/60 R 14 82 V

185 - Nominal section width expressed in millimeters.

60 - Ratio between nominal section Height and nominal section width. In practice this indicates the series of the tyre.

R - Radial construction tyre.

14 - Rim diameter, expressed in inches.

82 - Load index. Indicates the load carrying capacity per wheel.

V -Speed symbol. Tyre's maximum speed.

Speed Symbols

Symbol Km/H MPH

Q 160 100

R 170 105

S 180 113

T 190 118

H 210 130

V 240 150

VR >210 >130

W 270 168

Y 300 186

ZR >240 >150

so your 235/60 R 16 100H have a load index of 100, and speed rating H of 130mph.

4x4 vehicles tend to be bigger/heavier, and therefore require a higher profile tyre (more tyre between rim and ground) with stronger carcass and sidewall construction to withstand off road lumps and bumps and sharp objects.

I am not an expert, but I would expect a "road" tyre designed for a 4x4 would still be different to the same manufacturers "road" tyre for a hatchback/saloon.

I personally would get advice from a tyre specialist before fitting anything not seen as standard for your Rav.

The specs above were borrowed from www.prielli.co.uk and probably also available from the other manufs. such as Dunlop.

Hope this helps.

Mal.

Cheers Mal, so if the load rating is 100 for the RAV4, seems to make sence to stay with the correct rav4 tyre fitment  .

I will most likely be ending up with pireli tyres anyway, due to my Dad working for them!

But i've got in touch with that mytyres place for advice. But I expect they will say what I was already expecting, i've gotta stick with SUV tyres.

If that's the case then it will be the luxury tyre as they put it that I will be wanting. Just gotta find which ones fall into that category out of the Pirelli ones.

Still worried what they will sound like though. Shame I haven't got sommat to compare with.

You can check the spec out , on the mytyres site, look up the tyre you are after , then click on the Reifentest.com to the right of the tyre photo, this gives all the details you should need  .

Pirelli do 2 "Road" tyres that would fit the bill,

the Scorpion S/T and the Scorpion STR

I have Scorpion S/T on the front of my Rav, and I have not noticed any noise problems, grip is excellent. The STR is actually the recommended fitment from Pirelli and looks more like a car tyre than the S/T I've got.

Pirelli claim they both have low noise and good high speed road performance, along with good off road and snow performance - but then they would wouldn't they. However, I researched tyres for my previous 4x4 (Suzuki) and most reports I read rated the Pirelli Scorpion as the best on/off road tyre.

The pirelli web site is good - www.pirelli.co.uk, whole section just for 4x4 vehicles, and if your dad works for them, all the better.

For the record, my tyres are as follows:

Front:

Pirelli Scorpion S/T 215/70R16 99S (m+s)

Rear:

Dunlop Grantrek 215/70R16 99S (snow m+s)

Car is a 2000(X) Rav4 Gx 2.0 Petrol 5dr

I also checked out the Dunlop web site, www.dunloptyres.co.uk and apparently the Grandtrek TG32 215/70R16 99S was specifically designed for the Rav4 which is why my Toyota dealer fitted them as they are one of the o/e fitments.

Hope this is not too much info, and obviously price is also part of the choice equation to consider.

Cheers,

Mal

Well it looks like I will be getting the Pirelli ST or STR for around 80 quid each fitted, which is very good.

What do you make of the tyre noise on yours from the rear dunlops? Matter of fact, what about everyone else, how do you rate your rear tyres?

It seems to be the rear that's the noisiest on mine due to there being less sound proofing in the back. Obviously my front tyres are the same cause they are the same make. But the back is where I notice it most.
