Carina Brake Problem

As of last week we are the proud owners of a 1994 Toyota Carina E DXL with 143,000 miles on the clock. It has driven perfectly all week, but yesterday my Mum took it out for a long drive (60 miles plus) on a hot day. The brakes are normally powerful and responsive, but after 2 h the brake peddle was floored with little or no effect eeeek! After waiting for an hour for a brakedown van the peddle seemed normal again, strange!

Please, if any of you have any ideas, or similar experiences please tell me. My husband is sceptical, so all advice welcome

Do you have any service history with your Carina?

The hydraulic brake fluid should have been changed at regular two year intervals in order to prevent possible brake fade (which is what you appear to have had)

The hydraulic brake fluid is HYGROSCOPIC = absorbs moisture from the air and if it is not changed regularly will result in brake fade, resulting in long pedal travel and potential loss of brakes.

It would seem that if you got your car from a dealer (Toyota or otherwise) you should go back and ask for the brake flud to be changed and the brakes serviced.

If you purchased privately it would be a good idea to get a reputable garage to take a look.

Many thanks for your suggestion, the service history is a bit patchy for the last 5 years. We bought the car from a friend of a friend, the usual story! The car is now at a garage and I will ensure the mechanic changes that brake fluid! Thanks again for pointing out how important changing the brake fluid is
