Downpipe Freeing Itself?

Hi guys,

Just noticed last week my downpipe had a big crack in it, was underneath when the clutch was being fitted, so I took it to the specialist who made it for me. He removed it from the car but when he removed the top heat shields he noticed that 3 of the studs had come off and were missing. He'd used Locktight thread lock (red stuff, hi temp) and couldnt work out what had happened.

Any of you guys had similar problems like this? Whats the remedy?

Many thanks,

Rikki

I know some of he peeps with the aussie downpipe had similar problems, (Cracking)

this was fixed with a bracket fitted to the bottom of the downpipe to take the strain of the exhaust weight off it.

Possibly why the studs have come loose too.

Yeah, had read of that, Amram had that issue I remember too. Strange thing is its only popped a few of them off, the rest were tight as hell. God damn powerful Toyota's!

BTW how you getting on, heard u were selling the 2 to Ross from EC with the Yaris?

Sounds like the studs were done up too tight and snapped when the rest of the exhaust got hot and expanded.

mine keeps working loose and losing studs too, off the turbo. just keep nipping it up when it sounds really blowy. :(

haven't decided what to do yet for a permanent fix. have you got one of those brackets that gts chris supplies. they're a universal downpipe fitment and secure it to the block - maybe help stop it vibrating and losing bolts. just got to fit mine - i'll post if it works.

use silicoln around the sealing gasket, it provides a form of ashesion and a flexible seal

most exhaust fitters use it these days instead of the crappy exhausts paste which just goes hard and brittle, and its just the normal window gunk stuff
