I Realised I Shouldve Posted In Yaris

hey guys, can call me an absolute dim wit, but is there a way to attach a harness for bucket seats without losing the back ones? i've seen pictures of harness attached near the rear seat footwells before. not sure how they did it though.

Also is there a way to incorporate it with the airbag? the air bag is set off to the tension in the original seat belt right?

but if the side airbags are disabled because of the chair wouldnt it break the circuit? my friend took his steering wheel one off to fit another steering wheel and it deactivated all of them.

I'd like to keep the passenger airbag mostly, most important that one. driver airbag is important too but not as important as the passenger.

A direct replacement will be fine right? i dont know who to ask. I thought about mr T but they might gimme a load of bullcrap.

Is there anyone on the forum that has done this? has the airbags still fired?

Why on earth do you want to change the seat belts to a harness?

The crash integrity and overall survival chances in a head on collision are all dependant on the Yaris’s safety features.

Toyota spend tens of millions to ensure our safety then some chimp comes along and changes the seats/seat belts/suspension/wheels etc etc and changes the whole set up of the car (and not for the better)

I can never get my head around it!

If you want to mess around don’t forget there are small explosive charges in the sills and sensors here there and everywhere for the seat belt pre tensioners and load limiting features, this is so your internal organs don’t carry on through the windscreen when your body is held in place by the seat belt.

A harness will just bring you to an abrupt stop, and then all your fleshy bits will carry on causing all sorts of problems.

cheers for that reece <_< i believe he has already made his mind up and that was not the question!! a bucket seat is more likly to support u better within an acident then a seatbelt and stock seats! also as for loosing the side airbags there is only a small margin of a window when the side airbags will actuall fire

as to ur first question, no im not too sure where to attach them.

As for the airbags yes u can stiil keep both front, theres a little plug u can get from toyota which you can connect back into the yellow plug u nder the seat which the seat connects to. This fools the car into thinking the seat is still there, therefore will not disable the front two air bags when u remove the driver and pass seat, its comonly used for diconect the pass airbag if a baby seat is needed up front!!

Yaristpot may be able to help u out a little more on this so drop him a pm

thanx chuck!!! :group-cuddles:

and as to the other post, people change things on their car because no.1 the standard stuff isnt as sturdy and doesnt work as well as after market stuff. Performance parts?

If everyone thought like you then Every series would race the stock car, all the manufacturers of after market stuff will have no business, go out of it, fold and so the part of in which the economy they play in will collapse and cause wall street movement.

jesus, you dont half get some drive safely bible bashers in here.

i drive safely and confidently knowing i have got extra good bits than the stock.

Maybe because there has been a lot of Yaris prangs over the last 12 months, a couple serious ones which no doubt were survivable due to the integrity of the car.

With pleasure!

no reece knows what hes on about, i mean why would they put full harnesses and bucket seats in race cars??? seams foolish, why not just have a 3 pointer and some flat seats out of a 1.0 yaris. hell wouldnt lap belts be better.

bell end.

Ah this thread is sheer comedy. Ooh, if you want a harness you can buy one that bolts on to the buckets seats side bolts and then clips into the rear seat belt. Either that or you have to drill into the floor and bolt it down that way. I think.

Bucket seats and harnesses are a million times safer. When got hit by an old man in his lexus and wrote my tsport off 2 months back (got my newer one) it was the fact that i slumped unconcious into the passenger seat that saved an A pillar from going through my head. The yaris is a safe car but not as safe as other modern cars.

Lee, have you not noticed the G-Force pulling back the skin on your face when you drive your Yaris? You know i've seen many a car crash where some poor person has just exploded and left their entrails on the windscreen. The body is so badly designed, as Reece says, only the Yaris will save you from loosing your innards.

Ah, how we laughed.

Thanks Jap black! My friend said that drilling through the floor will be my best bet too, he said he has a friend who done it on a MX5 GT-X.

Thanks again! :group-cuddles:

dont drill through the floor, its not as easy as that, if you perforate the metal of a car after manufacture, no matter what you do the car will rust, it will always find a way. just use the seat mounts to bolt to. if need be use a slightly longer bolt. but DONT drill through the floor, it just wont be strong enough.

yeah the floor is just tin... great thing to bolt your seat to

needs to be properly welded to the frame that runs under the seat

Quite interesting. We have one side that goes with harnesses and after market parts. Another side that believes in the research and development of the manufacturer. Both have merits. Both have the same objective, which is to save the driver(s). However, they have different applications. Imagine that.

Stock setups are highly about compromise. The manufacturers want to fit all drivers, have an attractive, comfortable and easy to use system, that should potentially last the lifetime of the vehicle barring destruction. They want to pass safety tests with flying colours, while keeping costs to a minimum. However, they have lots of money to throw into research and development, and the power of mass production to get good bang for the buck.

Race setups are about driver safety and position. Comfort is somewhat less important, as long as it is not annoying. Price is less of an object, and they recommend regular replacement. The current race setup has not technically changed in a while. There's one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet here in this thread is that in any serious race setup there is a roll cage (ridgid cockpit for open wheel), which is an integral part of the competition automotive safety system, along with a helmet.

Mixing the two setups is problematic.

-A roll cage without a helmet could mean a pipe to the head.

-A harness without a roll cage could mean a sinking roof with nowhere to go.

-A racing seat could lend to a weakened stock buckle setup if it was integrated into the stock seat, like my Yaris/Vitz/Echo.

Either way by changing around the setup we are dealing in our own lives. It is best to make certain that good understanding is achieved before altering a safety system. It may make a driver happier, more comfortable, more confident, and maybe even safer, but I'm sure auto. safety experts, race builders, law enforcement, and especially insurance will see it differently.

Whatever path is chosen, make sure it is well understood.

Be nice...r ffs. <_<
