Your right in what your saying though it does make it much worse, but i think we're fighting a losing battle - people are going to do it anyway

My car is in the bodyshop until Friday & the light has been flashing for around 25 miles. I work 10 miles away & the bodyshops a bit further away than work. I dont like the sound of this 1 bit

I didnt think that people would be panic buying already!

My Yaris is two bars away from being full so I'm not bothered..will drive with a gentle right foot even more so than normal to conserve more of it. It's time like this when part of me wishes I didnt have a 24 mile all round trip to work and back!

lucky for some people running out of petrol and cant get to work cos of it, i still have to go to work as i work on the ambulances so ill get a pass to fill up the dam breakdown van :( so i can get to the ambulances when needed,

but as for buying for my own car i wont b panic buying at all no point at all, lets face it u will buy more petrol than u normally do so we cant win really cos the companies will still get the same money off you in the end,

Good job I'm planning on being off work for the next 2 weeks if this is true. I use a full tank a week doing a 500mile round trip to work and back. If I can't get fuel, then I can't do the journey.

And yes, shoot all the panic buyers. I remember last time, people who only use £5 a week in fuel suddenly filling up with enough fuel to last them for the next 2 months, IDIOTS!!!

I often fill a jerry can up whilst I'm at the petrol station so that I can fill my motorbike up when I get back - but now I think Moffmo might kill me if I do :D

You just know as well the majority of panic buyers are mums in Chelsea Tractors who need to drive 500 yards to take their kids to school....

WHY DONT YOU WALK YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL??

Pet peeve of mine!! :ffs:

It annoys me these people filling up loads of 'Jerry' cans :ffs:

It is an offence to store more than 2.5 Gallons in anyform of container (Yes I know a Jerry can holds 5 Gallon but there you go).

A bit off Topic ... any of our members know why they are called 'Jerry Cans'?

(Clue ...it dates from WW2)

I better start only half filling it then. :P

I figure it saves people hassle if I fill my jerry can up, it means that I only have to go to the petrol station once every 6 weeks instead of twice. The fuel in the car then lasts me 6 weeks and I can fill my bike up as well when I get home.

Are you sure about the only being able to store 2.5 Gallons?? Have you got any proof

Just had a search on the web and the only stuff I can find is what people have said rather than anything concrete but the general answer is you can carry up to 5 gallons of petrol but it must be in one can. So you can't take two 2.5 gallon cans and you can't take 5 1 gallon cans in your car but you can take a single 5 gallon jerry can as long as it has the type of fuel moulded into the case somewhere

From UKPIA website

Storage of fuel at home or the workplace(unless specifically licensed) is restricted by law to either metal containers with a maximum capacity of 10 litres or approved plastic containers of a maximum 5 litres capacity. These containers should be designed for the purpose and must be fitted with a screw-cap or closure to prevent leakage of liquid or vapour.

So with regards to use of a 5 Gallon Jerry can it's not quite 2.5 Gallon that you can store!

I wasn't actually against anyone filling a Jerry can up for normal use just I wanted to make people aware.

I'll be taking my petrol can to the station this weekend as I need it for my lawnmower and strimmer! I'll have to find a flak jacket as well from the sounds of it!

Cheers for something a little more definitive, can't find that though on the UKPIA site, have you got a link?

Cheers

Try this.

Reason I (and friends) got so 'curious' is we are also into military vehicles and many military vehicles have 'Jerry Can's' mounted on them. Thus we woundered how we would stand if we filled them right up ...to which we were told we would be breaking the law :o

bugger me!

That's a bit off, according to that it is illegal to even use a jerry can as it's maximum capicity exeeds 10 litres.

Oh well another thing to add to my list of things that I do that breaks the law :D

It's stupid rules like this that really ***** me off! I mean it's a lot safer to carry a 5 gallon metal jerry can of fuel than it is to carry a 1 gallon plastic one.

The only reason I got the metal jerry can was that I used to have a ford escort and I had a gallon of fuel in the boot of that which I had picked up for my old bike (did 125mpg so didn't need much) anyway some stupid old woman fell asleep and ran into the back of me and wrote the car off, the full petrol can got squished into a funny shape (but did survive) but just worried me a little!

thats what ive never understood, people who hardly use there car suddenly panic buying and even filling up spare tanks!

mines running on red at the mo had the light on for about 10 miles or so so ill fill her up to day

fair play people want to make a stand, but at the same time, there causing so much tourble, for everybody - for example those who cant get to work due to the milage, people living away from home or having to travel to uni

Great find guys! I had no idea there was some sort of strike planned, so it probably would have hit me when i had no petrol left!

Think i'll take the induction kit off and use the standard box as it gives me better mpg.

Or maybe not!
