dont forget ya earplugs. them topfuelers are LOUD not to mention quick.

a few facts and figures:-

a topfuel rail dragster uses 15 GALLONS of fuel in 1 1/4mile run and burnout

they pull 4g positive on acceleration and upto 7g negative when the chutes open

by the time they reach the 1/8thmile (halfway) they are basicaly dieseling as the plugs are shot.

so much fuel is injected into the engine, it runs on the verge of hydraulic lock.

modern top fuelers are thought to have upto 8000HP.

the crankshaft can twist upto 20deg on a run.

an engine can be stripped and rebuilt in 1 hour, and they do that after every run.

1 run costs over a thousand pounds, thats if nothing breaks and the crew work for free.

Bad time for petrol strikes to be happening

Awesome facts dawesy :D

dont worry they fire up and shut down on methanol and do the burnout and run on nitromethane.

i went to the main event a while ago and have to say these machiens are the fastest accelerating things on the planet. pity hafway through the day they did the bracket finals one of wch featured an 18secon corsa. how slow did that look.

by the way cris expect a full report when you get back.

just found this on another forum:-

Some interesting Top Fuel dragster facts:

* One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower then the first 8 rows at Daytona

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume.

* The supercharger takes more power to drive than a stock hemi makes.

* Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock.

* Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F.

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting off its fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half.

* Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons.

* To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's.

* If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second.

* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this sentence.

Must remember that one ...

I'm very sorry officer but I was slightly over the limit because my exhaust valves were at 1400F ...

:D :D :D

Some great info there. Dragsters are awesome machines. A great American import though the Europeans are getting there, er, fast!

nice one dawesy some superb facts there!!

superchargers take 10% of total engine power

so a 5000horse dragster uses 500horse to run the charger, far more than any car most people will own

i really wanna go see them, tempted to go this weekend myself, maybe if fuel situ is ok :(

go on sunday as its the final day and they tend to go balls out as they havent got to save the engine for the rest of the weekend.

think its £27 on the day but get there early if you want a good veiwing point.

it really is the fastest sport on earth
