Alloy Wheels + Gearbox

Hello, a few questions regarding my new ‘rolla gti.

When I change into second gear and the revs are above 4,000rpm it crunches a little when going into gear. Its fine when the revs are low and its a slower gewarchange. Any idea why this could be?

Also, when the tyres currently on it have given up the ghost ill prob get some new alloys as well, but can’t decide whether to go for 15 or 16 inch. Do you think that 16 inch alloys would ruin the ride and/or affect performance adversely?

Could anyone recommend alloys that would look good on a white rolla, I think a darker alloy will look better than silver personally. Plus I want it to look subtle rather than ‘max power chav’ me up’! Ideas welcome.

As always thanks in advance :D

Welcome to the site buddy!

The gearbox problem sounds like worn synchro bulk ring to me! Had the same problem on my AE86 and AE82! Lucky for me im a mechanic for Toyota so to replace them was an easy and cheap job! I advise finding a 2nd hand low milage g/box and fiting that, as it would be cheaper than getting the box rebuilt!

And in the way of wheels, i would personally go for 15's as it wont ruin the handling, but if you go 16's you will have to alter your wheel geometry, but it still wont handle as good!

16's will obvoiusly look better, but make sure you lower it aswell other wise it makes the car look tall and ugly!

This would be my choice of wheel, but i like the motorsport look! :D

speaking from experience, it will handle better on 15's. just depends what you want. i went from 14" to 17" on mine, and combined with 40 section tyres, stiffer springs and dampers, the ride is pretty jarring, and it just doesn't feel as "chuckable". has more grip though, and looks better. also, before i put uprated dampers on it, the front right wheel would catch over large bumps, so you need to take that into account.

good luck whichever way you go

Cheers for the help guys, appreciated.

Ill let you know what i choose for the alloys.

Where would you recommend getting a new gearbox, other than fensport? And how much would it cost to fit?

Thanks again.

Possibly a stupid question but here goes... rather than put in a new gearbox could i install a quickshift system, or would this not sort the problem with the worn synchro?? I'm no mechanic!

:help:

no, fitting a quickshift wouldn't sort it. how bad is it? if it just crunches slightly, just take it easy going from 1st to 2nd, or double de-clutch. might not be worth the hassle of a new box. suppose it depends what the rest of the car is like

as for somewhere other than fensport....dunno. there are a few specialist toyota breakers. try yell.com, or breakernet.com

To be honest it's not that bad. Only a slight crunch into 2nd, more of an annoyance than anything. I have tried heel n' toeing but it still seems to do it, when the revs are high... i'll put up with it until i have more cash. The rest of the car seems to be fine, it's only done 62k!

Cheers for the help again
