Engine Lag

Hi guys & girls, new member here. Purchased a new T4 Avensis 1.8 saloon a year ago. Great car but seems to have a problem with engine lag if I can call it that. At 80 if you use a balance throttle and you lift off just for a moment then reapply the engine holds back momentarily. Any ideas?
