Timing Belt/chain

I recently bought a used 94 pickup, and I don't know if the timing belt/chain has been changed according to schedule (it has 110K on it). It also is developing some sounds I don't like, which could be the timing mechanism. I took it to 2 shops, one of which says don't worry about it, the other says change it yesterday.

Is there any way to accurately determine whether or not I need to take out a loan and get the change done? If so, what would be a reasonable price? Also, is the engine in that model (a 22R?) an interference engine in which a failure would bend valves, etc., or would a failure just be a matter of pulling over to the side of the road?

Thanks,

Dave...

No change--> if there is a chain......otherwise if there is a belt you should change it as soon as possible.
