When i was 16 or 17 or so.. i used to clean stuff this size.. i worked in a ship yard before doing tyres. You want to see the size of the pistons that go with them  and the sumps are huge.

omg i bet you could swim in the sumps - not that you would want to!

bet that took you months to clean!

Took a couple of days just.. I was a Tank Diver, I used to have to clean out the sumps, clean the pistons, concrete wash the fresh water tanks, clean the diesel tanks, and we also painted the ships too... we once took my mates car (mk2 escort and sprayed it with a lovely light blue hammerite.. it was rust proofed for 25 years .. pity it wasn't tractor proof.. he crashed it inti one and wrote it off 3 weeks later

Wow, That is impressive

How much is that worth, and what type of engine does it go in. Krazy! Wonder what the tool kit looks like for an engine build

rubbish! :P

how are these for figures?

Total engine weight: 2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)

Length: 89 feet

Height: 44 feet

Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm

Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

and 1660 gallons per hour :o

hit the link ;)

one rather large engine

Presumably that's got to be for a ship? Monster!

On the subject of crankshafts, here's one for you:

* weighs 10kg

* takes 10 days just to heat-strengthen the steel

* total production time over 16 weeks

* about 200 made per year

* does 1650 miles and that's your lot!

I'm sure you can guess where that one goes :D

Paul.

F1 car?

Yup, this year's V10 unit. There's an article in Evo this month about the RVX-05.

Says the peak acceleration on the pistons is about 10000g, exerting a three tonne force on the conrod! No wonder it takes them a while to make the crank

lol the ship engine is only 50% efficient so if it was 100% efficient it would theoretically wang over 200,000horse at the fly

well... as you mention it

(and like les, im pretty mad on anything when it comes to heavy engineering  )

how about a crane.. thats so heavy, wheels or tracks would collapse.. and it has to 'walk' on hydraulic feet!

Too late... new one's out now! There's an article on the Exige 240R Vs 80's Giugiaro Turbo Esprit! Major drool fest on this classic of supercars!

On the subject of engines and machinery, iv always liked this behemoth:

Reminds me of me... large, bright and heavy!
