Smokey Turbo

evening all,

just got back from racing my mates subaru in my st205 wrc and i was winning! :D

then all things started to slow down a little and my boost gauge has slowly dropped over the last week from the usual 14psi which it has been running at for a while now trouble free, to a sub standard 5psi :crybaby:

there is a bit of smoke and my car just seems to be running a little odd. Im pretty sure its the turbo thats slowly packing in but has anyone else any other ideas what it could be. If it is the turbo should i uprate or rebuild?

if anyone is selling an uprated turbo let me know, or if anyone knows who is good for rebuilds then can you please also let me know!

One more thing does anyone know what turbo mine runs because i hear of ct20's and 26's but mine just says toyota on it!

cheers guys

Check all your pressure hoses for splits/leaks. If you can hear the turbo spinning up (presumably you can, as you are still making some +ve boost), then it must be working.

You might also have a stuck wastegate or a problem with the actuator. Presumably the actuator works off a supply of boost pressure air, so that's another place to look for a popped off or split hose. I could be wrong on this, but I'm sure a gt4 owner will be along soon to confirm or correct this.

It might also be that the ECU has measured excessive boost and tripped into a 'safe mode' of some kind. Could be worth a reset in this case.

Yep do what mikeb suggests and look for the obvious.

My Brothers turbo did the same. One day a little smokey, car running slightly rough. Day two did not use travelled to my garage 5 miles away and we could not find anything obvious. Day three while traveling the turbo makes small noise and is blowing more reek out than a fleet of diesel busses (whiteish reek). The turbo specialist said it was the actuator and advised a replacement. My bro gave him a second hand one and he agreed to fit it after some assurances it came from a trusted source (mate upgraded) and everything's back to normal now

if your going to re-build it then get it hybridised whilst your at it, doesn't cost all that much extra.

your turbo will be a CT20 as the CT26 was used on the ST185's and has CT26 on the side of it

what colour is the smoke thats coming out? it could well be that you've got a boost leak or it could be the turbo on it's last legs, check what mike has sujested. has the engine management light came on????

cheers for the advice, ill check everything this weekend. It might be an actuator fault because the boost pressure did seem to fluctuate sometimes, infact it did feel like it ran full boost at one point because it went like a rocket.

it was like the time i pulled the acuator pipe off my old rover turbo!

What is the best way to check the actuator. Also i forgot to mention that i have disconnected the VSV, could that have affected it? :ffs:

like i said thanks again for the info!

if you have disconnected the VSV without a boost controller you will be running minimum boost at all times mate

ive disconnected the vsv and fitted a bleed valve. i had set it uo it to run 14psi and has done trouble free for 3000 miles, could this still be the problem? :help::huh:

i'd check that no pipes have split or anything, it's really too hard to diagnose without having an actual look
