my gearbox in my 86 celica does exactly the same thing.. i was told that there maybe a loose/warn washer/baring (i dont knw exactly -it was brushed over in a conversation) in the gearbox itself. sorry im not much help i havnt yet found out if it can be fixed without a new gear box.

thanks for the info on changing the cluch. ill cross that off the prolly needs done list.

Sounds like a synchro. Try changing the box oil incase it's just clogged and not moving fast enough on changes. They do stick.

Put a flush in and drive a bit then drain all the oil and even although it's a manual stick auto fluid in. Even a 50/50 blend will do but a 100% fill is fine (to the fill line).

I have the same problem on a 95 ST202 Celica I've just bought - it only crunches going into third or fourth when at the redline though - it's fine for normal driving. Bit annoying at times though. New clutch has just gone into it so I presume the gearbox oil would have been changed already??

wat oil u put in it... just normal oil or u put in a flusher or just change it?>

I just drained and refilled it with Dexron II compliant ATF (Total Fluide ATX)...

(although my motor is 3SGE w/ M/T)

I just followed Chilton's celica manual... :)

toyota seem to make their synchros from soft cheese, usually 3rd gear and 5th synchros go,although 5th can crack and keep popping out .synchro are 30 euros for the ring, hub is usually alright but its messy taking out box ,need special tools, just send it to gearbox specialist, :P

Had the timing belt and a full service done on the car over the weekend - I mentioned the gearbox crunch to my mechanic and it seems to have disappeared for now - he must've done something to it...
